Some will say the details in this case sound like something out of a movie. However, for the woman who saw the crash, she tells News4Jax's Briana Brownlee it’s a reality she can’t escape.

An I-TEAM analysis of five years of traffic stop data from the Florida Highway Patrol shows the proportion of stops of Black drivers in northeast Florida and statewide is higher than their proportions of the overall population.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An 18-year-old man was killed Friday night when he was hit by two cars on Main Street south of Sara Drive on the Northside of Jacksonville, troopers said. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was hit by a sedan headed south on Main Street, and then was hit by a second sedan in the roadway. He died at the scene. The 56-year-old woman driving the first car and the 24-year-old man driving the second car were both wearing seat belts and were not injured, troopers said.

Experts say road rage can quickly escalate and turn costly: taking your freedom and skyrocketing your insurance rates -- but also possibly costing your life. “I can think of several situations here in the Jacksonville area where road rage was the result of a serious traffic crash,” Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Authorities anticipate road rage this time of year because there are more people on the road who are all trying to quickly get from point A to point B. She was recently charged with second-degree murder after investigators said her road rage resulted in one person dying, three people being injured and five vehicles damaged. The study revealed 82% of the drivers admitted to aggressive driving or road rage.

“When there is rain or high wind, we do see an increase in traffic crashes on the roadways,” Bryan said. “And we will put more troopers on the road for that time frame.”The moment it starts to rain, troopers adjust their workflow to account for the hazards. “The troopers will now start to go into a reactive phase where we get those increased calls for service — traffic crashes, disabled vehicles,” the sergeant told News4Jax. Since most traffic crashes happen on clear days, it’s a reminder that driving isn’t something to take lightly. So inspect your tires before you hit the road — it could end up saving your life, or someone else’s.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A bicyclist was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run crash on Normandy Boulevard, according to a spokesperson for the Florida Highway Patrol. Dylan Bryan said troopers were working to track down the car that was involved. The crash happened near the intersection of McGirts Point Boulevard. Details surrounding the crash were not immediately clear. A crash report from the Highway Patrol was said to be forthcoming.

According to multiple media reports, officials on Thursday identified the man who they say shot and killed the trooper as 28-year-old Franklin Reed III. He said a passing police officer from Riviera Beach fatally shot Reed. Riviera Beach is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from Palm City. Spaulding said Bullock is the 49th Florida trooper to die in the line of duty since the agency was founded 80 years ago.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla – A 5 mile stretch of I-95, just north of the International Golf Parkway exit, is now known as Trooper Wilburn A. Kelly Memorial Highway. Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Kelly was killed in the line of duty in 1974 when his vehicle was struck from behind in St. Augustine. Trooper Kelly’s career began on November 1, 1952. At the time of his death, Trooper Kelly was 43 years old and was affectionately known as “Buddy”. Local lawmakers, advocates, and members of Trooper Kelly’s family are attending the ceremony.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies are now using new technology to identify illegal drugs. FHP has also recently stepped up their efforts, in helping troopers distinguish marijuana from hemp, during traffic stops. It allows troopers to identify suspected narcotics in packaging with laser technology, without troopers having to remove or disturb the substance. Test kits are also being developed to help local law enforcement identify the presence of THC in edibles, like gummy bears and brownies and cookies. The drawback right now is that the test kits on the market currently are extremely expensive.
