(Bob Martin/London Marathon Events via AP)Kenyan runner Brigid Kosgei isn't expecting to lower her world record in Sunday's London Marathon, not with her training limited by the coronavirus pandemic. Kosgei topped her London victory last year by winning the Chicago Marathon in a world record time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 4 seconds. The London Marathon has been reduced to elite runners only and will have no spectators because of the pandemic. Tokyo was the only other World Marathon Major to be held in 2020 after Boston, Berlin, Chicago and New York all canceled.

Olympics marathon moved because of heat fears

Read full article: Olympics marathon moved because of heat fears

iStock/JordiDelgado(CNN) - The marathon and long-distance walking events at next year's Olympics have been moved from Tokyo to Sapporo to avoid a repeat of the recent World Championships in Doha where athletes toiled in searing heat and humidity. Organizers had also upped safety provisions in Doha, increasing the number of medical staff and bringing in ice baths. Last weekend was a landmark moment for both the men's and women's marathons as Eliud Kipchoge became the first person to run under two hours, while Brigid Kosgei knocked more than a minute off the women's world record at the Chicago Marathon. He will look to defend his Olympic marathon title from Rio at Tokyo next year. Kosgei clocked a time of 2:14:04 in Chicago, a minute and 21 seconds faster than Paula Radcliffe's record set in 2003.

"I am the happiest man," Kipchoge said after the unofficial two-hour marathon, adding that he hopes to have inspired many that "no human is limited." Despite the achievement, the milestone won't count as a world record. Speaking before the marathon, the reigning Olympic marathon champion said he was aware that there were critics of the manufactured conditions surrounding the attempt. He added that the 1:59 Challenge is different to competing in a race like the Berlin Marathon, where he set the current world record in 2018. "Berlin is running and breaking a world record," said Kipchoge.

On Saturday, the Kenyan distance runner will attempt to run the first ever marathon under two hours in the Austrian capital of Vienna, two years since he fell 25 seconds short. "I feel more prepared, I feel more ready and I am confident that I have been at that speed for the last two years," said Kipchoge, who holds the official marathon world record of 2:01:39. If successful, this won't count as a world record. Kipchoge, the reigning Olympic marathon champion, is aware that there are critics of the manufactured conditions surrounding the attempt. He added that the 1:59 Challenge is different to competing in a race like the Berlin Marathon, where he set the current world record in 2018.

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya celebrates at the victory ceremony winning the BMW Berlin Marathon 2017 on September 24, 2017 in Berlin, Germany. What Kipchoge is doing is taking gravity out of the equation," Tucker told CNN Sport. I am already the record holder for marathon but I need to do this for the human family." Running, especially marathon running, is supposed to be the purest thing humans put themselves through. Whether Kipchoge's attempt is as revolutionary as a moon landing or more akin to high jumping on Mars is a matter of opinion.
