Former Mayor Ellen Glasser pulled out of the Atlantic Beach mayoral race on Wednesday “effective immediately,” citing “serious medical challenges” as the reason.

Atlantic Beach city elections are held every two years, with commissioners serving staggered four-year terms. The Mayor/Commissioner serves a two-year term and vote with the other commissioners on matters brought before the commission. This year, elections will be held for mayor and commission seat 3. Commission seat 2 was also up for election this year, but the incumbent, Bruce Bole, was the only candidate to qualify, and was automatically re-elected.

On Monday, Mayor Ellen Glasser and the Atlantic Beach City Commission confirmed City Manager Shane Corbin’s recommendation to appoint Victor Gualillo as police chief. The Florida Department of Health in Duval County (DOH-Duval) has issued a county-wide precautionary swim advisory for all public beaches. Additionally, according to the health department, people should avoid contact with floodwaters which come from an overflow of any water body from rivers, lakes or oceans. Officials from the health department planned to test the ocean's water quality Thursday. Those dangers remained Thursday as people along Jacksonville's coastline were eager for life to return to normal. ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. - The city of Atlantic Beach wants to hear from you at its quarterly town hall this weekend. Mayor Ellen Glasser told News4Jax the focus will be on pedestrian and biker safety while updating the community on plans to improve and better connect parks like Donner Park. We have a lot of people that are engaged in recreation activities, explained Glasser. Its a family-friendly environment so we want to make sure we do what we can to protect people.The Mayor said several ideas are being discussed including bike safety events and whats called a safety town to teach younger kids how to ride their bikes safely. The town hall will be held Saturday, August 3 at the Baker Center at Donner Park at 2072 George Street.
