Three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, firefighters with Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department and members of the American Red Cross went door to door on Tuesday, giving out free smoke detectors, and installing them in some homes.

"You do that every six months to ensure that your smoke detector is working." Additionally, JFRD will provide and install a free smoke detector for qualifying Jacksonville residents living in single-family or two-family homes.
