JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two titans of terminology traded words Friday morning in the finals of the First Coast Spelling Bee. The crown stayed with Erik Williams, an 8th grader from St. Johns Country Day School in Clay County, marking his third-straight First Coast Spelling Bee championship. “It’s really scary for everybody but you have to stay relaxed under pressure.”Adding an extra level of challenge to the 2021 First Coast Spelling Bee was the change in format, due to the global pandemic. Williams will now compete for the second time in the Scripps National Spelling Bee when the finals are held near Orlando in July.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As competitors from all over the world arrive on the First Coast for our biggest week of golf -- The Players Championship -- a PGA Tour champion is focusing attention on a foundation to teaches children golf and positive life skills. Len Mattiace, based in Jacksonville, is using the tournament to highlight his foundation. “The Len Mattiace Foundation is centered around a common theme here in Northeast Florida: the well-being, growth, and safety of our kids in our community,” Mattice said Monday on The Morning Show. “Through the game of golf and a Stop the Bullying Campaign, we are able to positively affect thousands of kids close to home.”The foundation helps introduce children from all walks of life to the game through The First Tee of North Florida. Highs will sit in the mid to low 80s with partly sunny skies and a 20%-30% chance for showers. Right now the launch is a go and will take off at 7:27 p.m. You can catch the launch live on Channel 4. By Sunday evening a cold front will move in from the northwest leaving us with cooler air come Monday morning. Monday morning those across SE GA could see lows in the upper 40s and low 50s across NE FL. Thanks to the passing cold front we will keep the fall-like weather with daily highs in the upper 60s low 70s and lows in the mid to low 50s through the next week.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Eta was barely handing onto tropical storm strength as it was moving over Jacksonville at 10 a.m., according to the National Hurricane Center. As the NHC put the center of the storm 10 miles southwest of Jacksonville and it was moving north-northeast at 15 mph. By 1 p.m., the storm’s sustained winds were down to 40 mph as it was moving off the coast near Fernandina Beach and moving to the north-northeast at 15 mph. By 4 p.m. Eta was 90 miles south-southwest of Charleston, South Carolina. Greater Jacksonville was forecast to see gusts up to 40 mph and bands of tropical rain, but winds nor rainfall didn’t reach near those totals for most of the area.

The sunny skies and upper 80s hold strong through Friday afternoon, but the temperatures tumble Friday night. Expect a sunny, breezy, crisp day only warming into the low 70s. Temperatures will turn chilly quickly Saturday night, diving down into the low 60s for a chilly start Sunday morning. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a long delay to start the season due to a global pandemic, high school football season kicks off on Sept. 4 around Florida and Georgia. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced quite a few adjustments to schedules in 2020 and many teams have yet to finalize their schedules. Teams that don’t have opponents for a certain date or their schedules have not been provided are marked with a TBA. FLORIDAAll games start at 7 p.m. unless indicated. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Every area school district has gone back to summer workouts for high school athletes. Right now, high school athletes across the First Coast have returned to campus to begin voluntary work outs following a lengthy list of safety guidelines. Flagler County was the areas final county to resume, with Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas getting the go-ahead to begin workouts last Monday. In Clay County, athletes returned for workouts on June 22 and this week, high school sports there moved into Phase 2, which allowed athletes to transition from outdoor-only workouts to indoor workouts. Keep your distance when we are around each other.In St Johns County, athletes returned to campus on June 15 to begin working out.

In celebration of the holiday, the Acosta Bridge was lit up, just one way that Juneteenth was celebrated in the River City. People around the area participated in block parties and community conversation to discuss and learn about what June 19th means. This years Juneteenth celebration has taken on a new light given the recent civil unrest and many companies have closed their offices to observe the holiday. Today Tea Posh Naturals kicked off their three-day celebration of Juneteenth with a block party to bring the community together while supporting black-owned businesses. ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Annika Sorenstam has been retired from golf since 2008, but she’s never been too far from the game. Twelve years ago, Sorenstam’s foundation started the Annika Invitational and that event returns to the First Coast this weekend at the Slammer & Squire. The event for girls between 12 and 19 years old is a big one for junior golfers. At stake in the 54-hole tournament are points for the Rolex AJGA Rankings and the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Bigger than the points, Sorenstam said, is seeing some of the same faces in the area time and again and knowing that the experiences of the event are helping younger women.

Henry teamed up with Pay Away the Layaway to pay off $10,000 at a Burlington store on Monday night in Nashville, Tenn., according to station WKRN. I love doing stuff like that and when I can team up with someone, I’m all for it.” Henry said. Derrick Henry and volunteers from the non-profit organization, Pay Away the Layaway are visiting the Burlington store in Nashville, this Monday, December 23rd at 5:00 pm and paying off over $10,000 worth of holiday layaways for families in the area. His Two All Foundation hosted the Henry Holiday Giveaway at the Yulee Walmart on Dec. 18. Henry has rushed for 1,329 yards and 13 touchdowns this season and made his first Pro Bowl.

Over the next 60 days, hundreds of elementary and high school students from 14 counties in Northeast Florida will compete for the title of the best speller in their county. Those 14 will advance to the First Coast Spelling Bee in February. FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. - On a busy day of volleyball across the First Coast, Fleming Island and Bartram Trail rose to the top. Fleming Island, the No. 1 Ponte Vedra 2-1 on Saturday morning in a battle between the area's best. It a 21-match Ponte Vedra winning streak against local programs. But after a brief discussion between the main official and the back judge, it was ruled that Ponte Vedra touched the ball before it went out of bounds.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - As residents in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia are settling down following Hurricane Dorian, others are remembering Hurricane Irma and its destruction. Wednesday marks two years since Irma tore through the First Coast and Golden Isles, leaving millions of dollars in damage in its wake. READ MORE: The Flood and Fury of Hurricane IrmaSome people were impacted in ways they have yet to fully recover from. The effects of Irma were felt in St. Johns County as well where some neighborhoods were underwater for weeks following the storm. The Category 4 hurricane broadsided Cudjoe Key, Florida, on Sept. 10 and churned north across the entire peninsula.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla - Fortunately Dorian spared the First Coast from any power outages because dealing with these temperatures without air conditioning could be deadly. In the wake of hurricane Durian dry air has led to abundant sunshine, west winds and little humidity. This combinations resulted in been back-to-back hot days with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. Gainesville reached 95 and St. Simons Island 93 both also tied recordsMassive heat hits back Sunday with another attempt at breaking a record high. Look for a slight cool down this evening into the upper 60s inland to the mid 70s at the beaches under clear skies.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - Hurricane Dorian has scrambled up the high school football schedule across the First Coast. All games involving Duval County Public School teams were canceled or postponed, according to county athletic director Tammie Talley. About the only team that was able to salvage a scratched game was Trinity Christian, which lost its game against Ribault. Those follow a wave of changes a day earlier, 17 in all, that were either rescheduled or canceled. Its game this week at Savannah New Hampstead was scrubbed when the Savannah-Chatham County Public School District canceled school and athletic events through Friday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The 5 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center showed Hurricane Dorian's predicted path turning east and the storm's cone moving just off the Jacksonville coast. The Tropical Storm Warning includes Camden, Duval, Glynn, and Nassau counties. A Tropical Storm Warning means tropical storm-force winds are expected somewhere within the area within the next 36 hours. A Hurricane Warning means hurricane conditions are expected within 48 hours. Hurricane Dorian's sustained winds decreased through the day, but it was still measured at 120 mph at 5 a.m. today.

University of Florida AAThe 2019 class at University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame will include some representation from the First Coast. Former Mandarin high school star Fred Weary, who played for the Gators from 1994-1997 will be inducted and former Bolles swimming coach Gregg Troy will be presented with an honorary letter. He was twice recognized with first-team All-SEC honors and he still holds the school record with 15 career interceptions.
