After a beautiful day our temperatures will quickly drop after sunset. Winds will be breezy out of the NE at 10-15 mph. Starting Monday we’ll fall into a repetitive pattern of sunny skies with highs climbing a few degrees each day. Monday will start off in the mid to low 60s and by Friday we’ll be close to 80°.

Today stays dry but as clouds filter in this evening rain will develop Saturday with a cool and breezy couple days. Tonight, elevated northeast winds at the coast around 10-15 keep temps from falling below the upper 50s while inland lows will be in the upper 40s°. The bulk of the rain impacts only Northeastern Florida staying south of Georgia. Best timing will be in the mid day/afternoon but some spotty showers may briefly be possible during the morning. Temperatures will be in the 60s over the weekend with lows from the mid 30s to the upper 40s.

After a damp and foggy start we are starting to see some sunshine peek through the clouds. Afternoon highs will climb into the mid 60s across SE GA and mid to upper 60s even low 70s across portions of NE FL. If you’re planning on firing up the grill for Super Bowl Sunday you can expect some sunshine with seasonal comfortable conditions. Overnight lows will drop into the seasonal upper 40s with clear skies. The next round of potentially disruptive weather starts next Friday and spills over into the weekend.

Gag grouper will close to recreational harvest in Gulf state and federal waters Jan. 1, 2021. The same day, several species of grouper will also close to recreational and commercial harvest in Atlantic state waters and all state waters off Monroe County. All other Gulf state waters (except waters off Monroe County, which follows the Atlantic state season) and all Gulf federal waters will reopen June 1 through Dec. 31. In the Atlantic and state waters of Monroe County, the grouper closure ends April 30, and harvest will reopen May 1. Grouper information, including Atlantic and Gulf grouper regulations, is available online.

A return to cooler weather takes over this week with a front passing by this afternoon. Temperatures drop into the mid to low 50s by sunrise with below average highs in theupper 50s to low 60s in Georgia and reaching the mid 60s over NEFLA. Tuesday will be cloudy with coastal showers as a weak low sits off the coast before heading to the Carolinas. Wednesday will be much wetter for everyone as a cold front moves in keeping rain around from the afternoon into the evening. Temps barely reach the 60s Thursday with cool north winds and slowly clearing skies late in the day.

Showers continue to sweep east across NE FL this evening as a low pressure system bring moisture through the area ahead of our next cold front. These will be light to moderate showers moving in from the Gulf and leaving us with rainfall totals less than a quarter of an inch. We’ll start off the week with a few clouds and showers early Monday morning ahead of our next cold front. These light to moderate showers will fade by mid morning. Sunshine will return mid afternoon on Monday as the front passes and we’ll see highs in the low 60s.

Red snapper season is now open on Nov. 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29. During the extra days of the season, private recreational anglers may harvest red snapper in state and federal waters of the Gulf, but state for-hire operations are limited to fishing for red snapper in Gulf state waters only. “Gulf Red Snapper Season is one of the many reasons Florida is the Fishing Capital of the World,” Gov. State Reef Fish Anglers may receive a questionnaire in the mail regarding their reef fish trips as part of Florida’s State Reef Fish Survey. The federal season for for-hire operations with federal reef fish permits was June 1 through Aug. 1.

Shower activity will continue to move northwest tonight as tropical moisture moves through. This pattern continues with deep tropical moisture will remaining across the area. Tonight: A few clouds with off and on showers, lows in the mid to low 70s, and breezy winds out of the east 15-20 mph. Wake up temperatures in the 70s across southeast Georgia and northeast Florida. Looking ahead: Tropical moisture continues this week.

Tropical Storm Eta moves across the Florida Keys late tonight and into the eastern Gulf tomorrow. It will be wetter Monday with increasing showers as tropical moisture moves in with the potential for some locally heavy rainfall around the coastal areas. We keep rain around Tuesday and possibly into Veterans Day as rounds of showers pass quickly in the moist flow. Winds will decrease Tuesday and Wednesday as high pressure moves to the east and guides Tropical storm Eta through the Keys and into the Gulf where it wanders next week off the west Florida coast. Rain totalsIf this track plays out, the wettest day would be Thursday evening and Friday morning with 1-2 inches of rain.

JACKSONVILE, Fla. – The annual closure for hogfish fishing is approaching, if you want to enjoy a delicious hogfish, you’ll need to catch it before November 1st. Hogfish recreational harvest will close in state and federal waters off the east coast of Florida and Florida Keys Nov. 1. This closure includes all state waters south of Cape Sable, which is on the Gulf side of Florida, and up the Atlantic coast. The Keys/east Florida hogfish season runs from May 1 through Oct. 31. The new regulations require caught or speared hogfish to be no shorter than 16″ to the fork in the tail.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Long term forecast model (the GFS) has consistently shown a system developing South of Cuba around October 22nd. What has not been consistent is where this system ends up- in the Gulf, tracking over Florida, or curving northward into the Atlantic. It’s too soon to tell where the potential system may end up, but it does look like we will end up with a system named Epsilon, the next name in the Greek Alphabet. Wednesday’s model runs brought the path back towards the coastline of Florida, but not too close, meaning no serious impact. It’s likely that the forecast models won’t have a firm idea of where the potential system will end up until Friday or Saturday.

Hurricane Delta makes it’s 2nd landfall in Louisiana in a season that has seen back-to-back attacks on the Pelican State. Louisiana’s bad luck started with Cristobal becoming the second-earliest tropical cyclone to make landfall in Louisiana. The second was Category 4 Hurricane Laura, the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in Louisiana since a hurricane in 1856 -- before storms were given names. The list of storms is long averaging two tropical storm strikes in the state every 3 years since 1851. As we are seeing play out with Tropical Storm Delta, cold fronts invade Louisiana and quickly pick up any low-pressure system lurking in the Gulf.

Louisiana residents who are still recovering from the devastation of a powerful hurricane less than two months ago braced for another hit as Hurricane Delta steamed north through the Gulf on Thursday after swiping Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the Associated Press reported. “They do not retire Greek alphabet storm names -- at least so far,” Gross said. The last time we went through all the letters of the alphabet and moved on to the Greek alphabet was 2005. In 2005, a record-breaking year of devastating hurricanes, we made it through six Greek letters. The Committee also agreed that it was not practical to retire into hurricane history a letter in the Greek alphabet.

Tuesday’s forecast looks damp at times, with decent chances for rain in the morning, around 40%, building up to 50-60% range by the mid day. Expect passing showers and afternoon highs in the mid to low 80s. The morning chances for showers are mainly very early, and along the coastline. Wednesday we wake up in the low 70s to more clouds than sun and warm up into the mid 80s. With a 40% chances for showers mainly after 2 p.m, that makes Wednesday the least soggy day of this week.

The stream of light rain will slowly fade well after dark tonight with cool damp conditions overnight. Clouds are locked in and won’t break much Monday but tomorrow will have much less rain. The stationary front causing today’s weather remains nearby Monday and could cause some isolated showers but steady rain is unlikely and rain chances drop to 30%. Monday decrease in showers will be brief as showers pick up Tuesday with increasing overcast skies and rain into Wednesday. We are watching the tropics for a second potential storm to develop in the Gulf which could bring increasing rain into north Florida by the end of the week.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The tropical storm that formed Saturday off south Florida is strengthening over the warm Gulf waters is expected to approach the Gulf Coast on Monday night with high winds and a life-threatening storm surge. At 8 a.m. Monday, Tropical Storm Sally has 65 mph sustained winds and was centered about 115 miles east southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The National Hurricane Center said dangerous storm surge was possible along the northern Gulf Coast starting on Monday and added hurricane conditions could set in there early Tuesday. A tropical storm watch was extended westward from the Okaloosa/Walton County line in Florida to the Alabama-Florida line. Tropical Storm Rene weakened in recent hours and was reclassified as a tropical depression.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The tropical storm that formed Saturday off south Florida is now a Category 1 hurricane over the warm Gulf waters. Sally is expected to approach the Gulf Coast on Monday night with high winds and a life-threatening storm surge. At noon on Monday, data from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft investigating Sally indicated the system has rapidly strengthened to a hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of around 85 mph with higher gusts. Sally has 65 mph sustained winds and was centered about 115 miles east southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The National Hurricane Center said dangerous storm surge was possible along the northern Gulf Coast starting on Monday and added hurricane conditions could set in there early Tuesday.

Laura came blasting ashore just east of Cameron, Louisiana, as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 150 mph -- just 5 mph shy of a Category 5 storm. While 10 other Category 4 storms with 150 mph winds have hit the states, Laura was matched only by an 1856 hurricane for the strongest winds to ever strike Louisiana. USGS water level sensors measured a storm surge levels about half as destructive as models forecasted. Water level measured at the coast spiked around 10 feet before dawn Thursday, August 27. It took just a day over the western Gulfs warm water when rapid intensification jumped the storms 75 mph winds Tuesday to 140 mph by Wednesday afternoon.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Update: The hurricane is now moving northward with the initial motion estimated to be 15 mph. Laura is expected to continue moving northward through today which should take the core of the system across Louisiana and Arkansas. An Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft that is still investigating the hurricane has reported peak 700-mb flight-level winds of 156mph and SFMR winds of 139mph in the northeast eye wall. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles. Tropical-storm-force winds have reached the coast of Louisiana and an observing site at Eugene Island recently measured sustained winds of 39 mph and a gust to 64 mph.

JACKOSNVILLE, Fla – Hanna and Gonzalo are in the Gulf and the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, respectively. Yep, the earliest seventh and earliest eighth named tropical storms (no hurricanes, yet). Now, for Jacksonville, we will continue our pattern of coastal morning showers, that move to I-95 by the lunch hour and then blow-up west of town after 2pm. Saturday will be much like today, which will make it a decent day to get yard work done, but after that? Bigger afternoon storms and showers return to everyone starting Sunday through next Thursday, Many locations will receive 2-3 inches of rain (if not more).

A small disorganized cluster of thunderstorms has developed in the Gulf with little to no chance of development through the weekend. A weak trough of low pressure has moved inland along the central and upper Texas coasts. Weakening of this system is expected, isolated heavy rainfall could still occur over portions of southeastern Texas and southern Louisiana during the next day or two. This system is expected to move over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by late today, the central Gulf on Wednesday, and the northwestern Gulf on Thursday and Friday. None of these areas of interest pose a threat to our local forecast zones.

Earlier this month, Florida was delegated authority to manage recreational red snapper harvest from private vessels in Gulf federal waters. “I’m pleased to announce that our state’s good conservation practices are allowing us to have a 45-day Gulf red snapper season this year,” Gov. “Gulf red snapper season is always an exciting time for anglers and is just another reason why Florida remains the Fishing Capital of the World.”Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission chairman Robert Spottswood said Gulf red snapper season is a conservation and management success for Florida anglers. “Just a few years ago, a 45-day season for red snapper in both state and federal waters was out of reach," Spottswood said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Potential Tropical Storm 16 grows stronger as hurricane hunters find 60 mph winds in the sub-tropical Gulf low. National Hurricane Center gives the low pressure a 90% chance that it could develop into a possible tropical depression or sub-tropical storm. Forecasters issued a tropical storm warning for southeastern Louisiana, as well as the northern Gulf Coast from the Alabama-Mississippi line to the Big Bend area of the Florida Panhandle. A storm surge warning for the Florida Gulf Coast from Indian Pass to Clearwater Beach also has been issued. The system is expected to become Tropical or Subtropical Storm Nestor before making its way over the Florida Panhandle early Saturday morning.

October is a deadly hurricane month for Florida and makes up a secondary seasonal maximum after Sept. 10. Ten major hurricanes hit Florida since the mid-1850s, 33 hurricanes in total during the month of October including Category 5 Hurricane Michael in 2018. Florida becomes the target this month when cold fronts direct tropical systems toward the eastern Gulf Coast. Some coastal areas are running 2F above normal along the northern coast where Hurricane Michael struck. Water in the eastern Gulf had been about 2-4F above average when Hurricane Michael tracked through the 84 surf.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Floridians still recovering from Hurricane Michael are among the people being advised to brace for what could be the 2019 hurricane seasons second named storm. The National Hurricane Center reported Monday a storm system had an 80 percent chance of forming into a tropical depression, bringing heavy rains along parts of the northern and eastern U.S. Gulf Coast. Ron DeSantis tweeted an advisory to residents in North and Central Florida to prepare for the possibility of heavy rains and flooding. We are actively monitoring this weather system as it advances to the Gulf of Mexico, DeSantis tweeted Monday. While it is premature to determine the potential impact to Floridas Gulf Coast, heavy rain looks like an increasing possibility.The Category 5 Hurricane Michael made landfall Oct. 10 in Mexico Beach and caused massive damage in parts of Northwest Florida such as Bay, Gulf, Calhoun, Liberty and Jackson counties.
