According to the Highway Patrol, the Honda Civic they were in hydroplaned just before 6 p.m. and the 18-year-old driver lost control. Three were killed in a crash on Heckscher Drive near the boat ramp. FHP confirmed crash investigators are looking into whether tire tread or other faulty equipment might have contributed to the weather-related crash. Florida Highway Patrol data show troopers have worked nearly 20,000 traffic crashes in Northeast Florida since January 2019, with over 2,900 of them happening during rainy weather.

That includes Huguenot Park, where the northern portion of the beach is closed due to nesting season. Allison Convoy, with Florida Park Services, said the department will mark off the areas in late February or early March -- when the season begins. Northeast Florida has three critical wildlife areas, which tend to be prime nesting spots for the birds. Remember, you cannot enter areas that are closed because of critical wildlife.

That's why people come from everywhere," said Dick Rosborough, who lives near Huguenot Park. To help bring people back to the park, the Sandollar Restaurant on Heckscher Drive will be hosting fundraisers all weekend.
