In his 30 years with the Jacksonville Sheriffโs Office, Judge has never stepped away from a challenge. But last year he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrigโs disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, according to the ALS Association. โMyoโ refers to muscle, and โTrophicโ means nourishment: โNo muscle nourishment.โ When a muscle has no nourishment, it โatrophiesโ or wastes away.
