Plummer died Friday morning at his home in Connecticut with his wife, Elaine Taylor, by his side, said Lou Pitt, his longtime friend and manager. The role catapulted Plummer to stardom, but he never took to leading men parts, despite his silver hair, good looks and ever-so-slight English accent. That choice that was officially validated in the best possible way for the film — a supporting Oscar nomination for Plummer, his third. Plummer married his third wife, dancer Taylor, in 1970, and credited her with helping him overcome a drinking problem.

The organization originally planned to give Andrews its Life Achievement Award on April 25 in Los Angeles. Andrews' acting career has spanned several decades, winning an Academy Award in 1965 for her starring role in "Mary Poppins." The 84-year-old won two Grammy Awards and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Andrews will be the 48th recipient of the prestigious honor from the AFI, joining Mel Brooks, Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, George Clooney and Denzel Washington.
