Crash investigators said the 29-year-old man was driving north at 5:45 a.m. between Lawtey and Baldwin when he lost control, cross the median and struck the southbound vehicle. #BREAKING: @FHPJacksonville is reporting at least one fatality in a multiple vehicle crash on US 301 south of CR 218. The southbound lanes remained closed past noon. Crash investigators have not yet determined what caused the crash, but roads in the area were slick from rain overnight.

State troopers said Shears was heading northbound in the left lane of U.S. 301 when he tried to change lanes and lost control. A nurse from Shands Hospital in Gainesville and other bystanders began CPR, officials said. They said the soldier's pulse was restored and he was taken by ambulance to Shands Starke Hospital to meet the ShandsCair medical helicopter, where he was then flown to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident, which had one lane of both north and southbound traffic blocked.
