Jacksonville native Alex Fudge didn’t hear his name called Thursday night during two rounds of the NBA Draft, but he will still get the chance to make an NBA roster, and possibly play alongside LeBron James.

Newly-released documents from Duval County Public Schools reveal why teacher Amy Donofrio was removed from her classroom duties at the formerly-named Robert E. Lee High School, amid the heated battle over the future of the school’s name.

Nearly one year after Robert E. Lee High School was put up for renaming consideration by the Duval County Public Schools board, the logo for the school’s new name, Riverside High School, was released Wednesday.

Most ceremonies will be held outdoors with temperature checks and no mask requirement, but there are some exceptions.

The principal of Jacksonville’s Robert E. Lee High School opened up to students on Friday about the administration’s controversial decision to remove a teacher’s Black Lives Matter flag from the school’s hallway, the resulting plans by students to stage a protest of that decision, and a strategy to help students voice their concerns directly to him.

Dozens of people flooded the Duval County School board meeting Tuesday evening, taking the name change fight to the decision makers.

A school advisory committee has proposed four alternative names that could be used to replace the name of Robert E. Lee High School.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Duval County Public Schools has administratively reassigned Amy Donofrio, the Lee High School teacher who garnered attention this week after she refused to take down a “Black Lives Matter” flag that was hanging outside her classroom. The district confirmed Donofrio was reassigned to paid, non-teaching duties Thursday. The district said it has also opened a human resources investigation to review “allegations of potential misconduct” under school board policy. Donofrio told News4Jax she would not take down the sign, but according to her, the sign was taken down by administrators. The removal of the flag caused students at the school to attempt a demonstration on Wednesday, but the protest was squashed by school administrators.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The final scheduled meeting to discuss potentially renaming Robert E. Lee High School in Duval County brought more than 100 people out to share their feelings. As such, I am devastated by yesterday’s order to remove me from Lee High School and place me under disciplinary investigation,” she said. AdOthers disagree and say Lee High has too much history to be renamed. The School Advisory Committee will meet on April 5 to finalize up to five name recommendations to include on a ballot.

Students at the school told News4Jax they had planned to stage a “peaceful assembly” Wednesday morning in response to a school administrator’s removal of a the flag. A Lee High School senior said the school’s staff prevented the demonstration from happening. In response to Lee High School admin ordering a teacher to take down their BLM flag, students are creating their own “replacements” and hanging them around campus. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Robert E. Lee High School teacher told News4Jax that she was instructed by administrators to remove a “Black Lives Matter” flag from her classroom on Tuesday. The report focused on a viral video compilation of various clips recorded at Lee High School’s auditorium during public discussions on whether or not to rename the school. Hours after the post, Donofrio said principal Timothy Feagins told her to take the flag down by the end of the day. She said the school’s administrators told her that she has to take the banner down or the school custodians will do it. Four schools had meetings Wednesday, including Lee High School, where demonstrators gathered ahead of the 6 p.m. discussion. “Stop Playing games change the names” is what a group of protesters are chanting outside Lee High School. News4Jax spoke with Mykyla Hooper, who was named Miss Lee High School. AdLeon Barrett, a former coach and player at the high school, says it’s history that shouldn’t be erased. ”The money will drop out from the alumni and I’d hate to see that happen.”Also at the school was the group Save the School Names.

Jada Richard is on the cheerleading, weightlifting and flag football teams at Robert E. Lee High School. She competed in the Miss Lee High School pageant and was crowned second runner up. Jada mentors middle school students and has volunteered with Ronald McDonald House, Toys for Tots, My Pink Sister Inc. and Hollybrook Homes. Jada currently has a 3.9 GPA.

The EVAC Movement was created to help local youth address issues that impact them, such as racism and violence. It first started in a class at Lee High School where police officers were invited to join in-class roundtable discussions. Vincente Waugh, a former Lee High student, has been part of the nonprofit for a few years. He said, How about we do our own event, coffee blend? And we said, Lets go.On Thursday, Bold Bean began selling the EVAC Blend, an Ethiopian blend. During the month of September, 100% of the EVAC Blends proceeds will go to the EVAC Movement.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Lee High School teacher is under investigation after photos on social media appeared to show profanity written on a school white board. According to a spokeswoman with Duval County Public Schools, the photos were posted and circulated on social media last week. The spokeswoman did not disclose the profanity that was used or the name of the teacher involved. In a statement to parents, Lee High Principal Timothy Feagins said the teacher has been reassigned to duties without access to students. "Thank you for your continued support of Lee High School and if you have any feedback or input, I encourage you to reach out to me through the school."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Students and staff at Robert E. Lee High School on Jacksonville’s Westside are getting excited for National College Signing Day next week. News4Jax spoke with Lee High School Principal Scott Schneider, who said he can relate to many of the students when it comes to college. Schneider said the road to becoming Lee High School's principal was not an easy one. Schneider said Lee High School offers graduation coaches and a school counseling team to help with advice and resources to get students to the next level. Schneider said he hopes that keeping the Reach Higher campaign going and celebrating National College Signing Day will inspire more students to continue their education.
