LOS ANGELES - Earth Alliance, a new environmental organization created by Leonardo DiCaprio and his philanthropic friends, Laurene Powell Jobs and Brian Sheth, has pledged $5 million to help preserve the Amazon rainforest. Fires have surged in the Amazon this year -- the world's largest rainforest is burning at its highest rate since 2013 -- and Brazil's National Institute for Space Research says more than one-and-a-half soccer fields of Amazon rainforest are being destroyed every minute of every day. They are: Instituto Associacao Floresta Protegida (Kayapo), Coordination of the Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB), Instituto Kabu (Kayapo), Instituto Raoni (Kayapo) and Instituto Socioambiental (ISA). The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) merged with Earth Alliance last month to "help address the urgent threats to our planet's life support systems."

Leonardo DiCaprio is putting up money to help combat the raging wild fires irreparably devastating the Amazon. After joining the chorus of voices speaking out to raise awareness about the near-cataclysmic tragedy tearing through the rainforest -- doing untold damage to the environment through its impact on climate change and devastation of biodiversity -- the Oscar winner's environmental foundation, Earth Alliance, has launched the Amazon Forest Fund. "The Amazon rainforest is on fire, with more than 9,000 wildfires scorching delicate, irreplaceable landscapes across Brazil this week -- year to date, more than 72,000 fires have been reported by Brazils National Institute for Space Research (INPE). This is a significant increase from the 40,000 fires in Brazil at this point last year," the Amazon Forest Fund stated on the program's newly created homepage. According to CBS News, there are several additional organizations to donate to that are working to save the rainforest, including Amazon Conservation Team, Amazon Conservation Association, the Rainforest Trust and the Rainforest Foundation.

Stars have taken to social media in droves in the hopes of shedding light on the plight of the Amazon rainforest. But several images that have been shared are actually from older Amazonian fires and some are not even from the Amazon at all. CNN notes that the photo was published on a website in 2018, showing earlier fires than the ones currently ravaging the Amazon. The site notes that the fires themselves are not in question, as Brazil has reported 80 percent more fires in 2019 than there were last year. Many stars have spoken out following the lack of media coverage surrounding the fires.

Now, after a nearly four-year absence from the big screen, Tarantino is back with a movie that looks at a particularly colorful time in Hollywood -- the late 1960s.
