Mark Brunell: After worst season ever, Jaguars fans have reason for optimism
Read full article: Mark Brunell: After worst season ever, Jaguars fans have reason for optimismSounds odd to say that after the season we just witnessed, but it’s the best I’ve felt about this team in a long, long time. We knew it was going to be a tough season, but it was unwatchable at times. The Jaguars didn’t have the talent on the roster to be competitive week after week. For the first time in a long time this morning, it’s really exciting to look forward to 2021 as a Jaguars fan. In a season where the Jaguars mastered losing, the future feels like a win.
Mark Brunell: GM and coaching hires are huge in developing Trevor Lawrence
Read full article: Mark Brunell: GM and coaching hires are huge in developing Trevor LawrenceThanks to the Jets’ surprising resurgence, that means Jacksonville is positioned to draft that guy, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence. You’ve got to put a staff together to make sure they develop Trevor Lawrence and help him be the best quarterback he can be. He’s going to need some good coaching, some good teaching in the NFL. Looking at Trevor Lawrence, I don’t see a glaring weakness at all. As excited as I am about Trevor Lawrence, for me, there’s still a long, long way to go to put him in a situation where he can be everything you want in a franchise quarterback.
Mark Brunell: Jaguars’ loss to Ravens was their worst performance of a miserable season
Read full article: Mark Brunell: Jaguars’ loss to Ravens was their worst performance of a miserable seasonIn a season of misery, I can say that that performance against Baltimore was the worst of them all. I think we all just witnessed the worst loss in a season filled with losses. If you look solely at his numbers (22 of 29 passing, 226 yards, two touchdowns), they look good. While the Jaguars weren’t winning games, they were at least competitive mostly deep into the second half. The Jaguars might get a touchdown or two, but they’re not winning games with this current offensive lineup.
Mark Brunell: Where was the effort against the Titans?
Read full article: Mark Brunell: Where was the effort against the Titans?JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – I don’t think anyone expected the Jaguars to win on Sunday against the Titans. I know Doug Marrone didn’t announce his decision after the game, but I can’t imagine going back to Glennon at this point. In all likelihood, it’s going to be Minshew starting these next three games and the teams seeing what he can do. You’re not going to see any of those players, Glennon, Jake Luton or Minshew, here long term. The Jaguars have three games left to change that direction, where it’s not the worst season we’ve ever had.
Mark Brunell: Jaguars need to give Gardner Minshew another shot
Read full article: Mark Brunell: Jaguars need to give Gardner Minshew another shotWhy not think about going back to Gardner Minshew and see if he can get things moving. We’ve seen Luton. We haven’t seen Minshew since the Chargers game and he was playing with breaks in his thumb. I thought Glennon played well in last week’s 27-25 loss to the Browns. If Marrone rolls the dice once more with Glennon, and unless he shows significant improvement, the Jaguars need to go back to Minshew.
Mark Brunell: Packers tried to give a win away, but Jaguars wouldn’t take it
Read full article: Mark Brunell: Packers tried to give a win away, but Jaguars wouldn’t take itJACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The good news: The Jaguars played better than they have for most of the season in Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Packers. The bad news: The Packers played shaky football and gave the Jaguars every opportunity to win a game and they still couldn’t win. And a relatively good day for the Jaguars — by Jaguars standards, anyway — tells you where things are. Bad teams just can’t find a way to get it done. There were a lot of good things that happened on Sunday for the Jaguars.
Mark Brunell: Jaguars should see what they have in QB Jake Luton
Read full article: Mark Brunell: Jaguars should see what they have in QB Jake LutonJACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s still a loss, but the Jaguars didn’t play like a team that’s going in the tank on Sunday against the Texans. But I want to focus on the quarterback spot and the play from rookie quarterback Jake Luton, a sixth-round pick from Oregon State. Luton got DJ Chark back into the mix and Chark had been off the radar for weeks and out of sync with Minshew. I think that Luton, with what he showed against the Texans, certainly has earned another week of starting. I think the Jaguars should give him another chance and see what he can do.
Mark Brunell: Not many changes Jaguars can make to turn things around
Read full article: Mark Brunell: Not many changes Jaguars can make to turn things aroundIs this where the Jaguars make wholesale changes and shake things up to turn things around for the second half of the season? At this point, I don’t know what else there is to do for the Jaguars. I saw the report earlier Sunday about the Jaguars potentially pulling Gardner Minshew and playing backup Mike Glennon. I don’t think Doug Marrone wants to do that. I don’t think Marrone should replace Minshew and I don’t think he will.
Mark Brunell: Minshew and Jaguars offense going backwards
Read full article: Mark Brunell: Minshew and Jaguars offense going backwardsThat’s five straight losses for the Jaguars and Sunday’s 34-16 clunker may have been the worst among all those defeats. We know the defense struggles, but you can’t score 16 points in the NFL and expect to win. I know the defense gave up nearly 200 yards on the ground and a lot of points, but this loss was on the offense. I think the overall consensus at this point is that Minshew is not a franchise quarterback. We know the defense is going to give up points week after week.
Mark Brunell: Jaguars season starting to feel like a broken record
Read full article: Mark Brunell: Jaguars season starting to feel like a broken recordJACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The phrase that keeps running through my head as I break down another Jaguars loss is the same as it was last week. The Texans came into this game winless and averaging 20 points per game. The Jaguars made an 0-4 team look good. Jacksonville made a winless Cincinnati team with a rookie quarterback and a terrible offensive line look good. It would be one thing if Jacksonville was losing games during 35-30 shootouts week after week.
Mark Brunell: More of the same in another forgettable loss
Read full article: Mark Brunell: More of the same in another forgettable lossJACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Another bad loss and more of the same in how it looked. Asking a young offense to go up and down the field and swap touchdown for touchdown isn’t fair. But now, he’s four games into his NFL career and he’s been sacked 14 times in three games. This offense is still young and evolving and Gardner Minshew II isn’t quite there yet as a fully developed quarterback. The past two week’s he’s been jumpy in the pocket and not really settled back there.

We had some big games and big wins on Thursday nights and on Sunday nights. And then to come out and play like that, on national TV, no less, was a major step back for the Jaguars. Thursday night was a big step back. A big step back.
Mark Brunell: Loss to Titans stings, but showcases potential of Jaguars
Read full article: Mark Brunell: Loss to Titans stings, but showcases potential of JaguarsNo one, myself included, gave the Jaguars a shot to beat Tennessee on the road Sunday. They lost 33-30 in a game that you know the Jaguars probably should have won. But Jacksonville went toe-to-toe with the Titans, a team that played in the AFC championship game last season and gave them everything they could handle. Even after the first quarter when the Jaguars were struggling, Minshew just forgets about the bad plays. I don’t know if you ever really stop Derrick Henry, but they certainly neutralized him (25 carries, 84 yards).
Mark Brunell: Rookies shine, Minshew stands out in a great opening week
Read full article: Mark Brunell: Rookies shine, Minshew stands out in a great opening weekWe’ve heard so much about how bad this team is supposed to be and the players hear that, too. Until you get those young players in game action, you just don’t know how they’re going to perform. As young as the Jaguars are and rookies are playing like they did against the Colts, that is very comforting for me going forward. There were three times during the game where I saw a significant change in how Minshew performed compared to last year. Winning in Week 1 doesn’t change my long-term outlook for the Jaguars this season.

Jaguars roster analysis: Young, inexperienced, lacking stars
Read full article: Jaguars roster analysis: Young, inexperienced, lacking starsJACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jaguars set their roster at 53 after making cuts Saturday. One thing is clear, whether you call it a rebuild, blowing up the roster, or a youth movement, this is a very young team, one that needs stars to emerge in 2020. Add to that eight players who were rookies last year, and the Jaguars have 24 players out of 53 who have played one year in the NFL or fewer. Im a firm believer that if you have a young quarterback and in our case, we do have a young quarterback and Gardner Minshew. On a Monday, I would obviously go to the roster, and I would start with the secondary, Brunell said.

The Jaguars needed a win. The Jaguars had been playing arguably the worst football in the league over the past five and a half weeks. A win was nice, and it was needed. I just don’t think the Jaguars can do anything at this point to change what’s on the horizon.

A win against the Colts would’ve kept the Jaguars in contention. Not impossible, of course, but it’s highly unlikely that the Jaguars have a chance for the postseason. Nick Foles had a good first drive, but regressed after that first touchdown pass to D.J. And if there ever was a game this season that the team needed to win, next Sunday against the Titans is it.
