Cleveland Clinics Dr. Melissa Piliang, did not take part in the research, but said homemade sunscreen recipes can actually be a recipe for sunburn. What the study found, was that most of the online recipes contained things like coconut oil, and essential oils -- things that really have no sun-protective value, she said. Researchers found 95% of the social media posts made claims of the effectiveness of the sunscreens, and 68% recommended recipes with insufficient UV radiation protection. But if youre worried about applying, and re-applying a lot of sunscreen to your body, there are other ways to protect yourself.

A poison ivy rash will appear first in places where the skin is thinner, such as the eyelids. Some people are more sensitive to the effects of poison ivy than others -- it just depends on a persons immune system. If a small poison ivy rash develops, Piliang recommends using some over-the-counter hydrocortisone ointment, putting a cool compress on the affected area, or taking an antihistamine.
