To help reduce the population of homeless pets, the Nassau Humane Society (NHS) offered free spay-neuter services over the summer.

This sweet little girl is about 3 months old, and she needs a home. Her name is Juno. She was rescued by us from a kill-shelter in central Florida with her mom and three siblings. Thankfully their mom has just been adopted but the puppies are here ready and waiting for their new home!

The humane society is now urgently seeking donations and community support to continue providing loving homes for these deserving animals.

Sweet Penelope joined the shelter approximately a year ago as a puppy, discovered alongside her brother under a bridge.After being adopted, she faced adversity when she was surrendered back to the shelter on May 1. The reason? She had ingested an 18″ sock or stocking, causing a significant blockage in her stomach. Remarkably, she endured two weeks without eating before her owner sought veterinary assistance.Unfortunately, the financial burden of the necessary veterinary treatment led to her return to the shelter.Fortunately, she underwent emergency surgery and is currently recuperating. Once she regains her strength and fully heals, she will be ready for adoption.

Emmitt is a sweet senior dog, and he’s having an anniversary, though it’s not the kind that deserves a celebration. He has been with Nassau Humane more than 600 days. And yet, after all this time, he’s still smiling, still happy, still affectionate -- still hoping he’ll find his forever home.

Douglas is a special dog who will need a special foster or forever home as he recuperates from hip-replacement surgery. It's scheduled for Feb. 8. Douglas is about a year old and medium-sized, with a chocolate-colored coat. He walks well on his leash and rides well in the car. He'll need a calm environment and a special dog person or family who can give him plenty of TLC and help him with his rehab, which will include short walks. You'll be doing a wonderful thing for a most deserving dog, and we think you just might fall in love!

Buddy is approx 5 yrs old and our longest resident dog, over 600 days (not consecutive though). He has been adopted 2 times and returned through no fault of his own. He needs to be the only animal in the home.

NHS sent an update on Friday saying all 10 of the 7-month-old male beagles had been pre-adopted -- within the first hour of them becoming available on Friday -- which just happened to be National Dog Day!

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – The Nassau Humane Society has welcomed more than a dozen rescue dogs from Puerto Rico. Chissell said the Nassau Humane and other rescue groups took in 125 dogs from Puerto Rico. “So we were happy to take in another 13.”In October, Nassau Humane welcomed 15 dogs from Puerto Rico, and all have since been adopted. Now, Chissell is hoping for the same for these 13 dogs -- including Charlie, who was specifically chosen because of his medical issues. @NassauHumane has welcomed 13 rescue dogs from Puerto Rico.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Nassau Humane Society in Fernandina Beach took in 20 small dogs Friday from Animal Care and Protective Services in Jacksonville. The dogs were surrendered to ACPS on Friday, and the shelter contacted Nassau County for help. All of the animals will need vaccinations and some will need spay-neuter surgeries, which NHS will pay for. Dogs requiring spay-neuter will be posted for pre-adoption pending their surgeries. 20 dogs surrendered to the Nassau County Humane Society.

The Nassau Humane Society has rescued 27 of the dogs that Chella Phillips kept in her home as the wind and rain battered the Bahamas for days. NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. - A rabid otter in Nassau County has prompted a rabies alert from the health department. The only treatment for human exposure to rabies is rabies specific immune globulin and rabies immunization. From January to June, there have been two animals reported in Duval County with rabies and this marks the second animal in Nassau County. Nassau Humane Society is the animal control agency for the City of Fernandina Beach, and Nassau County Animal Services is the agency for all other parts of the county. The Nassau Humane Society helped rescue the dogs, which were saved from meat farms in South Korea and would have been sold for slaughter. The Operations Director at the society drove the dogs to safety on Friday. The dogs were brought back to the Nassau Humane Society.
