Patricia Arquette pushed herself outside of her comfort zone to play Tilly Mitchell on Escape at Dannemora. While the actress underwent a total-body transformation to play Tilly in the Showtime drama, she said her character differed from herself mostly in her view of sex and sexuality. Throughout the series, Tilly is seen in "very intense" sex scenes with multiple inmates in a back room at the prison where she works. "Especially in the case of Dee Dee Blanchard, [I had empathy]," she continued. The Act is another story inspired by real events, as Dee Dee's teenage daughter, Gypsy Rose (Joey King), helped murder Dee Dee -- with the help of a boyfriend -- after learning that her mother had been convincing the world that she was wheelchair-bound and suffered from a variety of illnesses.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard has called off her engagement. Blanchard, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence after the 2015 murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, got engaged to Ken in April after they met through the prison's pen pal program. Gypsy Rose and Dee Dee's story of murder and abuse is detailed in The Act, starring Patricia Arquette as Dee Dee and Joey King as Gypsy. The drama series follows Dee Dee, a woman with Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental illness that led to her making her young daughter, Gypsy Rose, purposely sick to gain attention and sympathy from others. Patricia Arquette was the first to kiss a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt. "So I end up marrying a very young Joey Gordon Levitt," Arquette continued. Arquette also recalled going up to the young actor before the scene to reassure him that this wasn't his real first kiss. "I do want to say that that kiss with Joey was very [short]," she said.
