Among some of the notables from the opening round:Fletcher won its first playoff game since 1996 with a 60-52 win over Daytona Beach Mainland in the Region 1-6A playoff. The Senators’ last win came in the second round of the 1996 postseason. Bishop Snyder edged Tallahassee Maclay 63-58 in Region 1-3A, the first playoff win — and 20-win season — in Cardinals history. West Nassau’s first playoff win in eight years, a 57-44 victory over Bishop Kenny, kept the odometer rolling on guard Deebo Coleman’s record-setting career.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jackson won its third Gateway Conference boys basketball championship in the past four seasons on Friday night, knocking off Paxon 73-52. The Tigers won championships in 2018-19 before being upset in the conference quarterfinals a season ago. Paxon was trying to defend its Gateway crown that it won last season on a team headlined by eventual Mr. Basketball Isaiah Adams. Instead, it had to settle for runner-up, thanks to a Jackson surge before halftime that broke open a tight game. On Tuesday, Atlantic Coast and Fletcher were the last two high schools announced as the beneficiaries of full-time certified athletic trainers through the Project 17 program. It aimed to put a certified athletic trainer at every one of Duval Countys 17 public high schools by 2020. Once that was complete, those ATs would leave the Project 17 structure and transition to Duval County Public Schools employees as ATs. Currently, 12 certified ATs have gone through Project 17 and made it into the Duval system. The final five schools, Atlantic Coast, Fletcher, Mandarin, Paxon and Sandalwood, will complete Project 17 within the next two years.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - An adult arcade in Jacksonville's Paxon neighborhood was held up three times this year before a robbery early Monday morning when a security guard was shot and killed, police records show. On Feb. 2, a gunman ordered an arcade employee to open the safe and got away with $8,000, police said. Just after 2 a.m. Monday, the fourth robbery this year took place at High Score Arcade. When officers arrived, they found the security guard had been shot during the robbery. The High Score Arcade does have legal permits and is able to remain in business for another five months -- unless there is an extension.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A man was wounded in a shooting near the Paxon neighborhood, and a woman says her father was lying in bed when he, too, was nearly struck by gunfire. Police said the shooting occurred in the street, and Delisha Ricks said bullets hit her home while she was cleaning. When she heard the shots fired, she ran to check on her father, finding him lying on the ground as he tried to take cover. According to Ricks, a bullet almost hit her father while he was in bed. "I want them to know that senseless shooting and hurting and harming other people, that doesn't make sense," Ricks said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The annual matchup between Paxon and Stanton was scoreless until the third quarter, when the Golden Eagles' Tyson Wright takes the hand off and goes 35 yards for the touchdown. Paxon takes a 7-0 lead. Then in the fouth quarter, Robert Florence goes in untouched from 10 yards out for another TD and the Eagles went on to win 21-7. "Great win for Paxon.
