The Popeyes chicken sandwich returned to the menu Sunday after a two month absence and as expected, it quickly became a hit. In New York City, the day after the annual Marathon with the city packed with revelers, Inside Edition found a line of folks who slipped out of work to get their hands on the crispy chicken breast on a brioche bun with pickles. The chicken sandwich was introduced last August and disappeared in two weeks. NFL star Stefon Diggs is wearing Popeyes inspired cleats and debuted them Sunday, coincidentally the same day the sandwich returned. The sorely-missed Popeyes chicken sandwich is back and people are acting ridiculous. Drive-thru lines are stretching into the streets, people are live-tweeting from their cars and chicken sandwich memes have hit what seems to be an all-time high. After launching in August, the Popeyes chicken sandwich flew out of the fryer and into people's mouths. To the relief of many, Popeyes announced last week that the hot-commodity sandwich would return November 3. For those who haven't connected the dots, that's a Sunday, the day their chicken sandwich rival Chick-fil-A is closed.

Joe Raedle/Getty Images(CNN) - The rivalry between fried chicken sandwich giants Chick-fil-A and Popeyes reached a new level this week, when Chick-fil-A forgot what day it was and Popeyes was quick to take a dig. Chick-fil-A sent out an email to its subscribers earlier this week to promote National Sandwich Day on November 3. No matter which Chick-fil-A sandwich you love, order yours on November 3 for National Sandwich Day." "We recently sent an email that included a message about National Sandwich Day, which naturally we were very excited about. The blunder isn't the only reason Popeyes is paying attention to the National Sandwich Holiday.

Read full article: Impossible Whoppers huge hit at Burger King

Burger King via CNN(CNN) - Popeyes' spicy chicken sandwich is the only thing in the fast food business that's hotter than Burger King's Impossible Whopper. That's great news for Restaurant Brands, which owns both chains. Restaurant Brands reported solid earnings for the third quarter Monday morning, led by a more than 10% increase in sales at Burger King and nearly 15% surge at Popeyes. The company said sales at Burger King restaurants open at least a year rose 5% in the quarter. Restaurant Brands attributed the success of the plant-based Impossible Whopper, which has been rolled out to all Burger King locations in the United States, for the strong sales.

When Popeyes abruptly sold out of its highly sought-after spicy chicken sandwich in August, hungry fans demanded to know when the viral phenomenon would return to its menu. For Popeyes and its competitors, the fried chicken sandwich is a hot commodity. Chicken is now the most popular meat in America, and while beef consumption is growing, chicken is on the rise. Restaurant chains looking for ways to boost sales would benefit from selling the best (or buzziest) chicken sandwich. In addition to the rising appetite for chicken, a Twitter battle helped call attention to the Popeyes chicken sandwich.

The newspaper published the story with the headline, "Chicken sandwiches incite fast food war." Within the last year alone, it's served the Ultimate Chicken Sandwich, the Mighty Chicken Sandwich, a spicy BBQ chicken sandwich and the McChicken. It's unlikely that the brand war would have made such a huge impact if Americans weren't already interested in fried chicken sandwiches. "And so there were definitely a lot of fried chicken sandwiches coming out at that time. And as bespoke fried chicken sandwiches gained local fans, a small, quirky chain was chugging steadily along.

The eagerly anticipated Popeyes chicken sandwich is about to return in a big way as the restaurant chain announced it is coming soon. But that's not the only way foodies can get a hold of the grub. But the anticipation is so intense for the item that there's even a Halloween costume called the "Sold Out Chicken Sandwich." The get up was sold by realtor Yandy and, like the chicken sandwich it is inspired by, the costume is sold out on their website. Popeyes sold an estimated 1,000 chicken sandwiches per store each day. The company has been working to get new chicken suppliers that will provide the specific cut of breast used for the sandwich.

Joe Raedle/Getty Images(CNN) - Well, if you didn't jump on the Popeyes chicken sandwich craze and wait in hour-long lines to sink your teeth into the fried chicken fillet on a brioche bun then you're too late. Popeyes is officially sold out -- for now. "As a result, Popeyes restaurants across the country are expected to sell out of the Chicken Sandwich by the end of this week," said the company in a statement. The war for who has the best chicken sandwich was ignited on Twitter earlier this month with Popeyes, Chick-fil-A and Wendy's all vying to be top dog. The demand for the Popeyes sandwich was so high that hour long lines were reported at some locations and even someone tried to sell the sandwich on eBay for $7,000.
