The Georgia Ports Authority says it moved a record number of automobiles across its docks in the 2024 fiscal year, bringing it neck-and-neck with the top U.S. auto port.

A part of this boom is because of ships that went there from Baltimore after the bridge collapsed a few months ago.

The bow and stern of the 656-foot car carrier that overturned leaving the Port of Brunswick in September 2019 have already been cut off, lifted and removed. An 80-pound anchor chain operated by a heavy lifting crane is tearing through the hull, cutting the ship into massive slices. The St. Simons Incident Response said each section weighs between 2,700-4,100 tons. Responders begin 3rd cut into the Golden Ray.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – A federal judge on Friday ordered attorneys for the U.S. Coast Guard and a maritime salvage company to answer detailed questions about plans to remove an overturned cargo ship on the Georgia coast by sawing it into eight enormous chunks. The multi-agency command overseeing the wreck removal hopes to start cutting the ship into sections in May. The company said the ship’s owner rejected its plan and hired another firm, T&T Salvage, willing to remove the vessel in larger chunks of up to 4,100 tons. Attorneys for the Coast Guard said in an initial response filed Friday that Cmdr. Norm Witt, the Coast Guard officer supervising the removal, approved the change after consulting with salvage experts in the Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy.

ST. SIMON'S SOUND, Ga. - Georgia state leaders are praising first responders and authorities at Port Brunswick on how they handled last month's cargo ship disaster in the St. Simon's Sound. During Wednesday's State of the Port Address, Georgia Gov. Even though it remains in the St. Simons Sound, the port was only shut down for four days. The Brunswick News reports Lynch praised the pilot who made the decision to ground the Golden Ray where it is. Specialists will continue to actively monitor air and water quality around the vessel, Jekyll Island, and St. Simons Island.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - Two weeks after the Golden Ray cargo ship carrying more than 4,000 vehicles from the Port of Brunswick capsized in the St. Simons Sound, even more fuel oil appears to be leaking from the ship. Prior to Friday's report, Unified Command issued a news release stating there was minimal or no environmental impact from the ship. Dezern, who runs a charter boat business, took News4Jax along the marshes 3 miles away from where the Golden Ray remains on its site. So far, there have been no advisories about swimming on St. Simons Island Beach or eating seafood caught in the area waters. Barge carrying crane working alongside the Golden Ray, which remains on its side in St. Simons Sound.

The Coast Guard said seven vessels had been waiting offshore to come into port since the Golden Ray overturned. According to the Coast Guard, 50 vessels come in and out of the Port of Brunswick every month. The Coast Guard also said the Golden Ray has approximately 300,000 gallons of fuel. A safety zone has been established a half-mile mile around the Golden Ray. The Coast Guard hopes to shrink the zone Thursday, as authorities are making progress.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The capsizing of M/V Golden Ray leaving the Port of Brunswick early Sunday is not the first time something like that has happened to a car and truck transport ship. A similar vessel named the Hoegh Osaka was hauling cars and trucks when it tipped over and, like in Brunswick, 24 crew members had to be rescued. The Hoegh Osaka was already away from a seaport when it started listing to one side and eventually tipped over in the water. "In the Hoegh Osaka report, it said there was no pollution." The liability of that can far exceed the value of the ship," Sullivan said.

Efforts ran into trouble amid the flames and instability of the ship, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Coast Guard Capt. Coast Guard Sector Charleston was notified by the Glynn County 911 dispatch that the 656-foot ship had capsized in St. Simons Sound. While the Coast Guard is the primary agency dealing with the rescue effort, Glynn County first responders are helping where possible.
