The Putnam County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved the relocation of the Confederate statue in front of the courthouse in Palatka. The Board of Commissioners also decided to form a citizens committee that will recommend where the statue will be moved to. The county said it will depend on private funding to move the statue. In early June, hundreds of people gathered outside the Putnam County Courthouse for a demonstration against racial inequality. The two young adults who organized the protest said it was time for the Confederate statue in front of the courthouse to be removed because they feel its a symbol of injustice toward African Americans.

The young organizers of the BLM protest said they think the courthouse is the wrong place for the statue. We feel it is a symbol of divisiveness and it does not belong at a place on the steps of justice, said Tevel Adams. The group is asking that the memorial statue be moved to a local cemetery where dozens of Confederate soldiers are buried. The Patriots Unite group also gathered to counterprotest the statues removal and the BLM movement.

Hundreds of people gathered Thursday outside the Putnam County Courthouse for the demonstration against racial inequality. They said they also want an oak tree outside the courthouse to be removed. Uniformed law enforcement officers also took part in the protest, including Palatka Police Chief Jason Shaw, who stood by Putnam County Sheriff Gator DeLoach. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said the peaceful demonstration at the courthouse ended without violence, attacks or arrests.
