"I remember when we did that episode, Luke called me and said, 'I love that Fred's doing this for Archie. I think he's always wanted to follow in Fred's footsteps and now feels that burden even more so.

ET previously confirmed that the one-hour episode will be a special tribute to the late Luke Perry, who played Fred Andrews on the hit series for the first three seasons. "I am deeply honored to pay tribute to Luke on Riverdale," Doherty wrote on instagram. Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa had said last month the season premiere would be dedicated to saying goodbye to Perry, who appeared on the show since 2017. In a statement, Aguirre-Sacasa said Perry had wanted Doherty to guest since season 1 of the show. "They were such good friends, and when we were putting together this tribute episode, we wanted to make it as special as possible, and so we asked Shannen to do a pivotal, super-emotional role," he said.

Shannen Doherty is headed to Riverdale. The addition of Doherty ensures a piece of his legacy will live on in Riverdale. "Luke and Shannen were really, really good friends," Aguirre-Sacasa told ET over the phone last week. Season four of Riverdale premieres Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 9 p.m. PT/ET on The CW.
