In response to Hurricane Milton, local nonprofit City Rescue Mission announced it will increase its overnight capacity and extend its hours for people seeking shelter.

The Well shelter is now partially reopening after it closed in April due to an uptick in violence involving homeless people in the area.

Flagler County and Gainesville will both have cold weather shelters open Thursday and Friday in anticipation of temperatures dipping into the 30s. Gainesville's shelters will also be open Saturday.

Hertz Arena in Estero is a 7,181 seat arena used for sports and entertainment. Right now, more than 500 people call it home.

With several local counties issuing evacuation orders for Hurricane Ian, the Red Cross offered some advice for those preparing to head to shelters.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville’s annual “Silent Night” program that aims to empty animal shelters for the holidays will soon be in full swing. Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) and the Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) are inviting everyone to foster a cat or dog. The goal is to empty the shelters by Christmas Eve. Animal lovers can visit the two shelters Dec. 17-24 to be matched with and pick up a furry friend. The JHS facility, located at 8464 Beach Blvd., is open from noon - 7 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. on weekends (closed Christmas Day).
