The proud parents, Grizzly and Teddy, Hoffmann’s two-toed sloths, welcomed a new baby into the world around 7 weeks ago. At 37, Grizzly is one of the oldest sloths to give birth and 47-year-old-male Teddy is one of the oldest sloths ever recorded. Both mother and baby are doing well and are currently on maternity leave in private quarters. On our visit we witnessed how the mom and baby interact and feed. We also learned fascinating facts about sloths.

By Friday evening, the system will have acquired tropical storm force winds (sustained winds of 40 mph or greater) and the hurricane center will make the announcement, that they are officially out of names for this season. Only the season of 2005 have we done this since lists of names were announce ahead of each season. TD #22 likely to named Wilfred later todayNote on the picture below that the “cone of uncertainty” becomes a bulb, this is an indication that the forecast from the National Hurricane Center has unusually high levels of uncertainty, basically a low confidence forecast. The good news is that this will be a slow moving system.

With a super-sized high pressure to our north and general lower than normal air pressure all around Jacksonville. So, that’s high pressure north and low pressure to the south, the greater the difference, the greater the coastal winds. There will be also be a possibility of another coastal tropical low pressure that could form within the battle field of high and low pressure. Wilfred will likely develop from TD #21 in the far, far, far eastern Atlantic Ocean.

Forecasters said Teddy was located more than 1,400 miles (2,260 kilometers) east of the Lesser Antilles. The three other active named storms are Hurricane Paulette, Tropical Depression Rene and Tropical Storm Sally. It was located about 330 miles (535 kilometers) west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, forecasters said. It could briefly become a tropical storm this week.

On the forecast track, the center of Teddy should move closer to the northwestern Newfoundland coast tonight and into the Labrador Sea on Thursday before merging with a larger extratropical low. By the Sea, Newfoundland (near the Cow Head Lighthouse) reported a barometric pressure of 979 mb (28.91 inches). SURF: Large swells generated by Teddy are affecting Bermuda, the Lesser Antilles, the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, the east coast of the United States, and Atlantic Canada. WIND: Gusty winds are possible along the western coast of Newfoundland tonight.

This summer, guests will be able to feed the sloths fruit or vegetables as they lounge around in their new home.
