Officers responded to Norfolk Road, in a neighborhood just south of the Trout River, around 9:15 p.m. Sunday. Police said the man had been shot several times. The Sheriff’s Office believes the victim was engaged in some form of an altercation with a man before the shooting and had taken that person into custody. On Monday morning, police announced Malik Simmons, 23, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

The Jacksonville Sheriffs Office is investigating an apparent hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning just south of the Trout River. Officers said they were called just after 2 a.m. to the intersection of North Main and 61st streets, where they found a woman lying in the median of North Main Street. Police said the womans body was lifeless and it appeared she had been hit by a vehicle. Officers said they also discovered vehicle debris in the street near the victim. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriffs Office at 904-630-0500.

Rescue crews rescued a man Saturday morning whose leg became trapped in a boat propeller in the Trout River, just off of Tamarack Street on the Northside. According to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, a swimmer was found with his leg trapped in a propeller. Crews worked underwater to disassemble the propeller to free the man, in what JFRD said was not an everyday rescue. He said friends were holding the mans head above water. According to responders, the mans head remained above the surface of the water during the rescue, and the man was able to speak with crew members during the process.
