JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Legislation proposed to Jacksonville City Council gives the first glimpse into how the city plans to handle protests during the Republican National Convention and where demonstrators will be allowed to congregate. The overlay zone, to include the arena and stadium, would allow special event vendors to conduct business and alcohol to be consumed. The security zone, where staged protests and marches would be allowed, is off A. Philip Randolph Boulevard north of the sports complex. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As the Republican National Convention nears, more than 1,000 names of local businesses appeared Thursday night on the RNC’s website, listed as vendors for the convention. The vendors range from national chains to local mom-and-pop shops. Looking through the list of 1,000 vendors, there are 13 different florists, more than 150 restaurants and a threat detection agency. Last week, nearly 80 local vendors showed their products off in an effort to become a “preferred” vendor for the convention. The Republican National Convention will run from Aug. 24-27 in Jacksonville.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Republican officials are exploring the possibility of hosting next months Republican National Convention in one of two outdoor stadiums in downtown Jacksonville, the Washington Post reported Thursday. Two Republicans involved in the planning told The Post that officials are looking at the overall logistics of hosting an outdoor convention. The stadiums being explored are TIAA Bank Field, home of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and 121 Financial Ballpark, home of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp baseball team. Republican officials recently toured both sites while in Jacksonville, according to The Post. On Monday, a group of more than 70 pastors sent a letter to Mayor Lenny Curry, arguing against bringing the convention to Jacksonville.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Residents and owners living near the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena -- where President Trumps renomination event is scheduled to be held in August -- have filed a lawsuit, asking a judge to declare the Republican National Convention a public nuisance. Defendants mentioned in the suit filed Wednesday included the City of Jacksonville, which is the owner of the arena, ASM Global, which manages and operates the arena, President Donald Trump and his campaign, and the Republican National Committee. The lawsuit states in part that the congregation of thousands in and around the arena in Jacksonville, under the circumstances and practices encouraged and required by the Republican National Committee and its leadership to be a nuisance injurious to the health, welfare and property rights of plaintiffs, in particular, and the health and welfare of the community of Jacksonville.The suit argues that the congregation of people in close proximity inside the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena will constitute a nuisance and result in massive spread of COVID-19 among those attending the event, unless restricted by the court. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. The Jacksonville 2020 Host Committee said Wednesday about 500 venues could be needed to host independent events expected in and around the city in August. While an expected 15,000 people are expected to the Republican National Convention at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, the Host Committee is soliciting venues for hundreds of smaller events. While historically more than 500 ancillary events have been held during previous party nominating conventions, the Host Committee acknowledges that the current coronavirus pandemic could impact the size and nature of those events. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Monster Jam roars back into the River City this weekend. The Monster Jam Triple Threat Series will be at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday and Sunday. About 140,000 pounds of dirt was trucked in and dumped on the arena floor. It takes the crew about six to seven hours to transform the arena for the big weekend. Thousands of fans are expected to pack the arena for the event, which is billed as being a totally different experience than the Monster Jam event in March.
