Britian's Prime Minister Boris Johnson hosts a virtual meeting of G7 world leaders, from within the Cabinet Room at Downing Street in London, Friday Feb. 19, 2021. (Geoff Pugh/Pool via AP)LONDON – Leaders of the Group of Seven economic powers promised Friday to immunize the world’s neediest people against the coronavirus by giving money, and precious vaccine doses, to a U.N.-backed vaccine distribution effort. G-7 leaders are eager to avoid looking greedy — and don't want to cede the terrain of vaccine diplomacy to less democratic but faster-moving countries such as China and Russia. The AU previously secured 270 million doses from AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson for the continent of 1.3 billion people. The G-7 meeting — and a speech by Biden at the Munich Security Conference on Friday — comes the day the United States officially rejoins the Paris climate agreement, the largest international effort to curb global warming.

UK braces for holiday COVID-19 surge, tighter restrictions

Read full article: UK braces for holiday COVID-19 surge, tighter restrictions

The government plans to relax restrictions on socializing and travel for five days before and after Christmas. With infections rising in the U.K., which has Europe's second-highest coronavirus death toll, there are concerns about a possible fresh surge of cases and deaths after the holidays. In Scotland, Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said the option for a post-Christmas lockdown “remains on the table." One expert was skeptical about the effectiveness of the U.K. government's three-tiered system of restrictions. The testing plans “are undeliverable in that timescale," said Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders.

A man wears a face mask as she skates past a closed pub in Soho, in London, Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020. That's the new Christmas message that leaders of the U.K.'s four nations were spreading Wednesday, after toughening up their advice over what people should do during the holiday period. Last month, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland agreed to permit a maximum of three households to mix between Dec. 23 and Dec. 27, regardless of what local restrictions are in place. He said anyone planning to meet others during the easing should start limiting contacts from this Friday, for example. The confusion surrounding the scheduled easing has been exacerbated by the fact that many parts of the country have seen restrictions tightened this week.

(Jonathan Buckmaster/Pool via AP)LONDON – A national train tour by Prince William and his wife Kate has received a frosty welcome from leaders in Wales and Scotland, with one Welsh official saying he would rather “no one was having unnecessary visits” during the coronavirus pandemic. Asked if it was the right moment for the royal couple to visit, Gething said Tuesday: “I’d rather that no one was having unnecessary visits. “The tour will be a welcome morale boost to frontline workers who have done so much during the pandemic,” the statement said. Wales and Scotland have their own devolved governments and different sets of coronavirus restrictions from England even though they are all part of the United Kingdom. Welsh and Scottish officials have discouraged people from the rest of the U.K. from traveling to their regions without a reasonable excuse in a bid to reduce the virus’s spread.

The Gloucestershire Constabulary says it will patrol routes from Wales and pull over drivers they believe are making long journeys. Under the U.K.'s system of devolved authority, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have established their own public health rules. The announcement came after talks among political parties in the region’s power-sharing government that stretched from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. “Why did the prime minister reject that advice and abandon the science?” Starmer asked. “I rule out nothing, of course, in combating the virus but we’re going to do it with the local, regional approach that can drive down and will drive down the virus if it is properly implemented,” he said.

(Andrew Matthews/PA via AP)LONDON Britains national weather agency has confirmed what most people cooped up at home during the coronavirus lockdown may have guessed May was the sunniest month on record. The Met Office said Monday that there were 266 hours of sunshine during the month, beating the previous record of June 1957 by one hour. Over the weekend, beaches and parks were packed with many people clearly not observing social distancing guidelines to stay 2 meters (6 1/2 feet) apart. (CNN) - South Africa defeated Wales 19-16 in a pulsating Rugby World Cup encounter to reach its third final. To have so many people from South Africa come and support us, it means the world to us. England's shock victory over the All Blacks on Saturday means there will be a repeat of the 2007 final when South Africa won its second World Cup. If Ramaphosa's prediction rings true, South Africa, which won its first World Cup on home soil in 1995, would equal New Zealand's record of three titles. South Africa looked to control proceedings with its big forward pack throughout the match and enjoyed dominance in the scrum and maul.

Two women a day are dying unnecessarily from heart attacks in England and Wales because of a gender gap in awareness, diagnosis and treatment, a leading health charity says. LONDON - Two women a day are dying unnecessarily from heart attacks in England and Wales because of a gender gap in awareness, diagnosis and treatment, a leading health charity says. The charity wants to end the misconception that heart attacks are a male disease and to encourage women to know the risks and symptoms -- twice as many women in the UK die of coronary heart disease than of breast cancer. One of the studies suggests that smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes increase the likelihood of heart attacks more in women than in men. Yet women are dying needlessly because heart attacks are often seen as a man's disease, and women don't receive the same standard of treatment as men.

(CNN) - Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala and his pilot were exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide inside the cockpit of their plane before it crashed into the English Channel in January, investigators say. Sala and David Ibbotson were traveling from Nantes, France, to Cardiff, Wales, when their Piper Malibu aircraft crashed, killing them both. A report released by the Air Accidents Investigations Branch (AAIB) said it was likely that Ibbotson would also have been exposed to carbon monoxide. "Toxicology tests found that the passenger had a high saturation level of COHb (the combination product of carbon monoxide and haemoglobin). It is considered likely that the pilot would also have been exposed to carbon monoxide," reads the report published Wednesday.
