Radio station WSVH reports the commission voted unanimously Thursday evening to approve a proclamation backing the mining plan by Twin Pines Minerals of Alabama. Twin Pines Minerals is seeking federal and state permits to mine for titanium dioxide less than 4 miles from the edge of the Okefenokee, the largest federal refuge east of the Mississippi River. Company officials said they could provide scientific modeling to show any harm would be minimal. Fish and Wildlife Service staff wrote in February that mining could pose "substantial risks" to the environment.

The second shooting took place 15 minutes later at the convenience store at the intersection of Martin Street and Highway 301. The GBI said the victims of the second shooting had been at the American Legion post earlier in the evening. According to the Charlton County Herald, about 100 people were at a party at the American Legion when the first officers arrived. Anyone with information about either incident is asked to contact the Charlton County Sheriff’s Office at 912-496-7321, the Folkston Police Department at 912-496-2563 or the GBI at 912-729-6198.

Leland Bass of the Georgia Forestry Commission said Stephen C. Foster State Park was closed to new visitors Friday, while campers already in the park were being allowed to stay until Saturday morning. PHOTOS: West Mims FireAs of Friday, forestry officials said 385 people from all over the country were helping battle the West Mims Fire. A community meeting was held Friday evening in Charlton County so people who live near the fire could find out how forestry officials plan to keep them safe. According to forestry officials, trigger points have been set up, and if the flames reach them, they will evacuate the residents.

The facility, which will be called the Folkston ICE Processing Center, will be located next to the privately owned D. Ray James Correctional Institution, and house immigration detainees under a five-year agreement between Charlton County and ICE. The center is expected to begin accepting detainees during the first quarter 2017 to help ICE's increasing need for detention beds. The facility is expected to create an estimated economic impact of about $42 million for the Folkston area, U.S. Rep. “We are very appreciative of the continued confidence placed in our company by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with this important contract,” said GEO's CEO, George Zoley.

GEORGE, Ga. – Elementary school parents in Charlton County received a disturbing letter this week from the Charlton County superintendent. Superintendent John D. Lairsey sent a letter home with St. George Elementary School students on Tuesday saying that on Monday someone in a vehicle had approached the playground and attempted to talk to some students. The incident was reported to the Charlton County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating and has identified a person of interest, Lairsey said. Lairsey's letter said the students were behind a locked fenced area and a school employee intervened during the incident. "We are confident the students and staff at St. George Elementary School are safe."

Terrel Moore was last seen since about 5 p.m. Jan. 5 at his home in Folkston. Deputies said he had missed required medications. "At this time, we believe Mr. Moore, who had not been taking his medications, walked away from his home and became disoriented and was overcome by the elements," said Sheriff Conner. Moore's remains were sent to the Medical Examiner's office in Savannah, Georgia and the sheriff's office is awaiting the official cause of death.

The charges are in connection with having sex with one boy younger than 16, and six boys older than 16, which is the age of consent in Georgia. The law, however, says having sex with a student is a crime. The superintendent of Charlton County schools says the district is cooperating with the Sheriff's Office investigation and Wilson will not return to campus. The grandmother of one of the victims called this, "The most disgusting thing I ever heard in Charlton County.
