The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference had released its spring football schedule last month featuring a six-game regular season. Unlike the larger universities, FAMU doesn’t have the TV and multimedia contracts that could have made a spring season safe and economically viable. “I mean it’s very clear, had we played spring football, our football program, in particular, would have operated at a loss,” said Gosha. In addition to football, FAMU also canceled spring season for indoor track and field and volleyball.

Following fellow FCS conferences the Ivy League and Patriot League, the MEAC announced it would not have competition in the fall and consider trying to make up the schedule for those sports in the 2021 spring semester. The MEAC is comprised of 11 historically black colleges, though its membership is in flux. Earlier this year, Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman announced they would be leaving the MEAC and joining the Southwestern Athletic Conference next year. The MEAC had more than two dozen players with area ties on the rosters of its programs last season.

FAMU says its satisfied with progress that has been made with the education program.
