The City of Jacksonville designated Monday as a Heat Emergency Day for the second consecutive day.

The bulk of Sunday’s showers and storms will come along later in the afternoon along with the high heat. Heavy downpours and gusty winds are likely with the stronger storms developing along the sea breeze convergence.

The city of Jacksonville activated its heat emergency plan on July 16, which was the third day in a row the city saw a Heat Advisory.

Jacksonville went under its first heat advisory of the summer Tuesday. The air temp was 98 degrees. The heat index: was 110 degrees, that's the top 25 hottest heat index for the month of June, according to Chief Meteorologist Richard Nunn.

Heat Advisory in effect through 5p.m.  Feels Like temperatures around 105-110 degrees thorough 5 p.m. today.  Sea breeze showers and storms expected this afternoon, mainly after noon with the best chances west of I-95.

Update: Strong storms continue to move inland across Putnam, Southern St Johns and Flagler County this afternoon. Storms are producing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, frequent lightning and pea size hail.

Hot and dry this afternoon.  Temperatures will be shy of record range in Jacksonville today, but record highs may be possible across southeast Georgia.  The onshore flow returns this afternoon keeping the sandy shore a little cooler.  Mostly clear to partly cloudy skies tonight.  Widespread record temperatures possible tomorrow.

It was hotter earlier this week compared to today. I shouldn’t be so trite since it means little when it’s still in the low 90s this afternoon. The bottom line it’s a roaster but at least the heat advisories are not flagged today. Tomorrow they may return. Get ready to be blasted harder Saturday as the hottest day of the season is anticipated with upper 90s in JAX.

The sea breeze has fired up and the coast is getting gusts over 20 mph helping to hold down any heat advisories today except for Alachua and Columbia counties through 7 pm.

A Heat Advisory is in effect through 7 p.m. Scattered showers and storms will develop after 2 p.m. Slow-moving storms could produce locally heavy rainfall and gusty wind.

The heat will be the big story for days as the feels like index is breaking above 105 degrees during the afternoon. A weak sea breeze is not making it much past the St. Johns river keeping the temps blazing over interior parts of north Florida.

Afternoon scattered showers are around with the chance for a few brief isolated thunderstorms. The wettest locations will be areas south of I-10 with some of the rain tracking back to the coast this evening.
