A 15-year-old right whale named Nimbus is now free from being entangled in a fishing rope.

A right whale named “Smoke” and her newborn calf were spotted by researchers on Dec. 26 off St. Catherines Island in Georgia. It was the fifth calf sighting this season, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute reported four calves off the coast of Florida and Georgia so far this season.

There are fewer than 350 North Atlantic Right Whales left on earth, and they’re dying faster than they can reproduce. That’s the subject of a newly-released documentary called, “The Last of the Right Whales.”

Christmas eve crowds on Jacksonville Beach got a special treat. They saw a mother right whale and her calf swim nearby. Sky 4 also spotted the pair and captured it on video (shown above).
