Scenic Highway 1 was closed near Big Sur after a section of the roadway collapsed when the cliffside below gave way amid torrential rain. The atmospheric river is part of a major change in weather for California, which had significant drought conditions for months.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Eta was barely handing onto tropical storm strength as it was moving over Jacksonville at 10 a.m., according to the National Hurricane Center. As the NHC put the center of the storm 10 miles southwest of Jacksonville and it was moving north-northeast at 15 mph. By 1 p.m., the storm’s sustained winds were down to 40 mph as it was moving off the coast near Fernandina Beach and moving to the north-northeast at 15 mph. By 4 p.m. Eta was 90 miles south-southwest of Charleston, South Carolina. Greater Jacksonville was forecast to see gusts up to 40 mph and bands of tropical rain, but winds nor rainfall didn’t reach near those totals for most of the area.

WASHINGTON – Election Day ushered in skirmishes near the White House and relatively minor demonstrations in California and elsewhere on the West Coast, but none of the widespread unrest that some had feared in the hours after the polls began closing around the country. In Washington, D.C., police created a wide security perimeter around the White House, where President Donald Trump watched the election returns and hosted guests. Mostly peaceful protests overtook streets near the White House earlier this year following the killing of George Floyd, who was Black, by a Minneapolis police officer. Hundreds of people gathered in a generally festive mood Tuesday night on a street near the White House that was recently renamed Black Lives Matter Plaza by the city's mayor, who is Black. Seattle police advised residents in a tweet about a pair of marches moving through separate neighborhoods.

– President Donald Trump and challenger Joe Biden are focusing the presidential campaign on the wildfire-scorched West Coast, with Trump meeting fire officials in California on Monday while Biden declares the fires underscore an urgent need to address climate change. Trump has repeatedly discounted the impact of climate change, walked away from a major international climate agreement and proudly rolled back environmental regulations. Amid that disapproval from the left, Biden over the weekend offered his most pointed criticism connecting Trump’s climate change denialism to the fires. Trump often casts doubt on climate change. In 2015, he stated bluntly: “I’m not a believer in global warming, I’m not a believer in man-made global warming.” After the publication of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report concluded climate change would hurt the economy, Trump said he read it but didn’t believe it.

Jay Inslee on Sunday called climate change “a blowtorch over our states in the West." “The debate is over around climate change. “This is truly the bellwether for climate change on the West Coast," she said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation." “And this is a wake-up call for all of us that we have got to do everything in our power to tackle climate change." “Talk to a firefighter, if you think that climate change isn’t real," the Democratic mayor said on CNN's “State of the Union."

A weather pattern stretching across the country is broiling the West Coast with intense heat while offering us hurricane protection for a couple of weeks. Our hurricane protection comes as an East Coast trough of upper winds blows from the Southwest. It is tracking away from North Carolina and those same winds should weaken Tropical Storm Josephine over the weekend. But while the tropical storms stay away, this isnt to say we will dry out. Hot temps next week out west with cooler 80s along the east coast while storms get deflected.

Other congressional districts that had the highest household income growth were in or around Houston; Pittsburgh; Provo, Utah; parts of South Florida and the wealthy retirement haven of Sarasota, Florida. Most of the income growth in these areas came from wages, said Mark Vitner, a senior economist at Wells Fargo Securities. Household income grew more in Democratic-leaning districts than Republican ones, according to an Associated Press analysis of the data by congressional districts. Household income grew by an average of more than $12,000 in Democratic-leaning congressional districts, compared to more than $9,000 in Republican-leaning districts. In other areas, income growth was significantly more modest.

The Impossible Burger made a splash last week when it debuted in California -- in its first full weekend sale in Gelson's supermarkets, Impossible Burger outsold ground beef from cows, in terms of both revenue and the number of pounds sold, said Impossible Foods. "The Impossible Burger generated more excitement than any other single product we've seen in more than a half-century of operations," said Gelson's CEO Rob McDougall in the press release. The Impossible Burger debuted three years ago at Momofuku Nishi, a high-end restaurant in New York City owned by chef David Chang. Now, the Impossible Burger is served at over 17,000 restaurants, including Burger King and White Castle.
