Driver hurt, passenger killed in rollover crash on Butler Boulevard

FHP said driver swerved to avoid vehicle changing lanes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A passenger in a pickup truck that swerved to avoid a vehicle changing lanes on J. Turner Butler Boulevard early Monday morning died. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the vehicle that caused the driver to swerve did not stop.

Troopers said Preston Edwards, 26, of Jacksonville, died at the scene. The driver of the Toyota Tundra,, Kenneth Cruz, 23, was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with minor injuries. A second passenger in pickup was not injured.

The crash about 7:20 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Butler near Interstate 295. Two westbound lanes were closed for nearly four hours, causing heavy delays during the morning rush hour. 

According to the FHP report, the crash is still under investigation.
