Authorities: 13-year-old crashes stolen truck, runs off, steals gun from car

Deputies: Surveillance shows teen attempting to pull gun on Marion County man

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A 13-year-old Jacksonville boy crashed a stolen truck in Marion County, ran off, broke into several cars and attempted to pull a stolen gun on a man who tried to confront the teen Monday morning, authorities said.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said Zyaire Evans is charged with multiple felonies, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft of a firearm, armed burglary, burglary, unlicensed carrying of a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm by a minor.

The Florida Highway Patrol has also charged him with grand theft, driving without a license, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of a crash and reckless driving.

A Sheriff's Office public information officer told News4Jax by phone Tuesday that they're glad the teen is off the streets and is no longer putting lives in danger.

Although he is a minor, News4Jax has chosen to name him because of the seriousness of the criminal charges.

Authorities said Evans was driving a stolen Chevrolet S10 south on U.S. 441 from Jacksonville to Tampa when he hit an SUV that was stopped at a red light as he tried to turn onto Northwest 77th Street.

Evans then jumped out of the truck and ran off into the Irish Acres subdivision, where he broke into several vehicles and stole items, including a firearm, troopers said.

Deputies said he was trying to steal another vehicle so he could continue his journey to Tampa. Deputies also said Evans grabbed clothes from one vehicle he broke into and began changing.

Authorities said he walked to a home on Northwest 85th Loop and entered an unlocked truck in the driveway.

Surveillance video released by the Sheriff's Office shows that, while the teen is inside the truck, a neighbor pulls up in a car and briefly confronts him. In the video, the teen can be seen walking away from the truck, and the neighbor goes back to his car, which the neighbor's wife is driving. While at the car, the neighbor takes out his phone and begins taking pictures of Evans. It’s at this moment when investigators said Evans charges at the man, while attempting to pull a gun from his waistband. The neighbor and his wife then take off and report the incident to deputies.

Investigators said Evans stole the gun from the unlocked truck he entered, and used it to threaten the neighbor and the neighbor's wife.

News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith said the confrontation could have ended differently.

“It could have been a robbery. It could have been a homicide. He went around checking doors. That’s what juveniles know, that at some point, they’re going to find a door that’s unlocked and there may be a gun inside. And that’s what happened here," Smith said. "He found a gun and he went towards someone, possibly to use, but the person took off. “

An MCSO K-9 team found Evans during a search of the area and took the teen, who deputies said was still in possession of the stolen gun, into custody.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Evans confessed to all of the crimes he has been charged with.

The 26-year-old Jacksonville woman driving the SUV hit by Evans was not injured, troopers said.

He is currently being held on no bond at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center.
