JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman was killed and four people were injured in a crash Tuesday afternoon on San Jose Boulevard between St. Augustine and Baymeadows roads, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
The two-vehicle crash happened just before 3 p.m. and blocked all lanes of San Jose Boulevard at El Ciento Boulevard for hours. Sky4 cameras showed a pickup truck overturned on the road and the car badly damaged.
Investigators said a Lexus traveling northbound crossed the center line and struck a Toyota Tundra heading southbound.
Police said 67-year-old Tricia Bettman, a passenger in the Lexus, died. She lived less than a mile from the site of the crash, police said.
The driver of the Lexus and three people in the Toyota Tundra were hospitalized with serious injuries, police said.
Strong storms moved through the area as traffic homicide detectives investigated the crash.
Traffic in both directions was initially blocked, with traffic detoured through neighborhood streets between El Ciento Boulevard and Conga Street. By 4:45 p.m., one northbound lane and one southbound lane had reopened, but traffic was still backed up.
Just after 7:30 p.m., all lanes of San Jose Boulevard reopened after tow trucks removed the two vehicles involved from the scene.
Chip Brickell and other drivers told News4Jax that speeding is an issue on San Jose Boulevard.
"The speed limit is 45 (mph), but people are normally doing 55 (mph) or more ... There's been several wrecks here over the years," Brickell said. "They need to put a police officer down here sometime, maybe in the late afternoons, and start writing tickets, place some kind of sign there."
The crash is still under investigation.
