ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A 25-year-old passenger in a Toyota Corolla was killed and three other people were hurt before dawn Thursday in a multivehicle crash on Interstate 95 in southern St. Johns County.
Three vehicles were headed north on I-95 at the U.S. 1 exit at 4:48 a.m. when a woman driving the Corolla lost control and overcorrected, hitting the guardrail and spinning the car back onto the highway, where it was hit by two other vehicles, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The man who died was later identified as Jose Vazquez-Trujillo of Palm Coast.
Troopers said the driver of the Carolla, Dhayre Oquendo, 25, of Sanford, was taken to Halifax Hospital with serious injuries. Two children were among four people from Quebec who were in a Chrysler Pacifica that hit the Corolla. They were taken to Flagler Hospital with minor injuries, according to the FHP report.
The other drivers involved remained at the scene, FHP said.
All northbound lanes of I-95 near the U.S. 1/Bunnell exit were blocked near the St. Johns County/Flagler County line through the morning rush hour. Drivers experienced heavy delays in the area and were urged to use U.S. 1 as an alternate route.
