FHP: Road-rage chase causes deadly crash on Roosevelt Boulevard

Troopers say 60-year-old man killed in 6-car crash Thursday afternoon

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 60-year-old man was killed Thursday afternoon at the end of a road-rage pursuit from Mandarin to the Westside in which he and the driver of another car collided several times before a final crash involving six vehicles on Roosevelt Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the man driving a Chevy Suburban and a woman, identified as Ana Jimenez, 22, who was driving a Honda Civic, were first involved in a fender bender near the Target store on San Jose Boulevard about 4 p.m. The driver of the suburban backed into the Honda Civic, then the SUV fled toward I-295, hitting another car in the process.

The driver, later identified as James David Robinson, continued over the Buckman Bridge and exited northbound onto Roosevelt near Naval Air Station Jacksonville, where the third crash involving six vehicles took place, according to Sgt. Dylan Bryan of the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the Suburban crossed the median into oncoming traffic and hit the side of a pickup headed southbound. The Suburban flipped and hit two other SUVs that were stopped in southbound lanes. The driver of one of those stopped SUVs backed up, hitting another stopped car.

According to the FHP, Robinson died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Records show Robinson was labeled a habitual traffic offender until 2010 and had multiple felony arrests. He was arrested in 2008 for sexual battery, but that charge was dropped. Robinson had arrests for carrying a concealed firearm in 1987 and 1989.

Jimenez was taken to Orange Park Medical Center with minor injuries, FHP said. One other driver was said to have serious injuries. Four other people had minor injuries.

Southbound lanes of Roosevelt were blocked at Birmingham Avenue, and northbound lanes of Roosevelt were blocked at Collins Road for most of the afternoon rush hour while troopers investigated.

The FHP has asked anyone who witnessed any of the crashes or has video footage of them is asked to call 904-349-6572 or *FHP on any cellphone.
