Woman struck, killed by SUV on Union Street

Union Street blocked from Laura to Main streets from about 7-9:15 a.m.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman died early Monday when an SUV left Union Street and onto the sidewalk, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The 55-year-old victim, who has not been named was hit just before 7 a.m. on Union just east of Laura Street when a man in a Chevy Tahoe went through the intersection and left the road. The woman was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries, where she later died.

Witnesses told police the driver was unconscious and a medical condition may have caused the crash.

"Witnesses to the vehicle (say) a white male, who is 30 was unconscious in the vehicle, so it might be a medical reason for him leaving the roadway," JSO Traffic Homicide Sgt Donald Washington said.

The driver had regained consciousness and was cooperative with investigators once he regained consciousness.

Evidence markers could be seen in the street and the man's SUV was seen off the road in the bushes.

Police said they would determine any charges pending completion of the investigation, but alcohol and speed did not play a factor in the incident.

All lanes of Union from Laura to Main streets until the SUV was towed away and the scene cleared about 9:15 p.m.
