JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Atlantic Boulevard service road on the Intracoastal Bridge is closing soon for roadwork and could be closed for up to a year, the Florida Department of Transportation said.
FDOT said the service road for drivers headed westbound on Atlantic Boulevard will close Monday. It won’t be available for any public activity after that, including fishing.

The closure is expected to be in place throughout a bridge improvement project to install a cathodic protection system on the structure. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2021, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.
Cathodic protection systems extend the life of concrete infrastructure in corrosive environments by using electric current to safely and effectively mitigate corrosion, saving taxpayer dollars from more costly rehabilitation projects, FDOT explained.
Contractor Seacoast Inc. will complete most construction activities on the $2.6 million project below the bridge deck, away from the view of drivers. Limited daytime lane closures throughout construction are expected for concrete pouring activities.
