Florida Highway Patrol said the crash occurred when a tractor-trailer traveling in the inside lane of I-95 attempted to make a U-turn.
Four vehicles were in the center lane at the time, traveling behind each other.
The first oncoming vehicle hit the right, rear tire of the tractor-trailer and a chain reaction crash ensued.
The first oncoming vehicle, driven by a 26-year-old with a 75-year-old passenger, was deflected on impact with the tractor-trailer and was rear-ended by a van following directly behind.
The van, carrying an 82 and 81-year-old, came to a final rest in the center lane and avoided any more hits but the first oncoming vehicle was hit again on its right-rear side by a following SUV.
A fourth and final vehicle, driven by a 27-year-od, was following behind and hit the SUV, spinning the SUV clockwise so that it was facing north. Neither driver in those vehicles was injured.
The passengers in the first and second vehicles are seriously injured. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not.
The interstate was closed for about three hours while investigators cleared the scene. If more information becomes available, News4Jax will update this story.
