JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – JEA crews will begin replacing a 24-inch water main along San Jose Boulevard between Old River Road and Claire Lane.
The work is expected to start Monday night and will last three months, according to JEA officials.
This project follows an emergency repair of a water main break, which News4JAX covered last July.
JEA realized after evaluating the water main more that the pipe needed to be fully replaced to maintain the reliability of the water system and prevent future outages and traffic disruptions.
To guarantee the safety of the workers and public, one traffic lane in each direction on San Jose Boulevard may be temporarily closed at times between I-295 and Ricky Road during construction (note times below).
“We wanted to minimize impact on commuters and local businesses as much as possible. During the daytime, the turn lanes will be closed throughout the length of the project. So that will be the major impact on commuters, having the turn lanes closed. But we are hoping that keeping the travel lanes open during the daytime will alleviate that backup for commuters,” Karen McAllister, JEA spokesperson told News4JAX.
The median and turn lanes within the work zone will also be closed during the project.
San Jose Boulevard (I-295 to Ricky Road)
Anticipated Start Date: Feb. 10
Estimated Completion date: May 2025
Lane Closure Hours (Night Work)
8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. (1 northbound lane closed)
9 p.m. to 8 a.m. (1 southbound lane closed)
Dates and times may change. Extended or weekend work hours are necessary to speed up the project.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead for possible delays and consider alternate routes like I-295 when possible.
Speed limits in the area will be reduced to 35 mph. Please refer to the map below for more details on the work zone and detour routes.
JB Coxwell Contracting Inc. is performing the work. All drivers are asked to follow construction signs, detours, and instructions provided by crews.
This work will not affect customers’ regular water, sewer, or electric service. For planned outages, impacted customers will be notified 48 hours in advance.
The first week of construction is expected to be the busiest, according to JEA.
