Man dies in head-on crash after car tries to pass in no-passing zone in Alachua County: FHP

A 61-year-old man was killed and three other people were critically injured Sunday night when a car and an SUV collided head-on on County Road 235 about 4.5 miles northeast of Newberry, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

According to the crash report, the car, driven by a 35-year-old man, was headed southbound on CR 235 around 6 p.m. just south of NW 204th Street when the driver tried to pass another vehicle in a double yellow, no passing zone.

The car hit an SUV head-on, sending everyone in both vehicles to the hospital with critical injuries.

The right front passenger of the SUV, a 61-year-old man from Crystal River, died at the hospital, troopers said.

The 42-year-old woman driving the SUV and a 14-year-old female passenger were also critically injured, along with the driver of the car.

Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt, according to the report.

The crash is still under investigation.
