FHP locates vehicle suspected in Nassau County hit-and-run that killed 57-year-old woman

YULEE, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol said it has located the vehicle suspected in a hit-and-run that killed a 57-year-old woman Thursday night in Yulee.

Around 2 p.m. on Friday, troopers said that they had found the suspect vehicle. They added that no arrests have been made.

According to FHP, the woman was riding a bicycle heading north on Chester Road, approaching Sweetbriar Lane, about 2.3 miles north of State Road 200, when she was hit around 11 p.m. and knocked off her bicycle.

According to the FHP report, the SUV that struck the woman left the scene.

The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, died from her injuries.

“About 11 o’clock or 11:30 and there was a state trooper knocking my door. I wake up, and I was sleeping, and very professional,” resident Santiago Diaz said.

Diaz’s home surveillance caught moments after the crash.

“Some people speed sometimes, but most of the time, people drive safely, because always, they have a person from the sheriff’s or state troopers always hanging out around here,” Diaz said.

Diaz believes adding streetlights, bike lanes or a sidewalk could make a big difference.

“They have people in bicycles and even running and walking over here, but because this place, they don’t have like a walking side, or they don’t have like other street that they have bike lanes, that’s the only thing they lack in this area,” Diaz said.

FHP said the investigation is ongoing.
