Settlement requires more information on toll charges

No description found

Avis, Budget and Payless rental-car companies can charge $3.95 a day to cover electronic tolls but must clearly state the fee on websites, in emails and at the counter, as part of a legal settlement announced Tuesday.

Attorney General Pam Bondi's office reached the settlement with Avis Budget Car Rental System, LLC, which owns the rental-car companies.

The agreement was a result of an investigation into allegations that the companies failed to sufficiently disclose to customers a daily fee for e-Toll services.

The settlement said renters who go through cashless tolls or electronic toll lanes and do not use their own transponders are automatically enrolled with e-Toll.

They are then charged a service fee for each day of the rental, including days when e-Toll is not used.

Along with requiring greater disclosure, the settlement also sets up a process for customers to seek refunds for service fees paid since Jan. 1, 2010.
