Duval County voters to have more places to cast a ballot early in 2024

Early voting in Duval County

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With 2024 just a few weeks away, and the Florida presidential primary coming up in March, Duval County voters will have more options for early voting in the upcoming election year.

Tuesday night, the Jacksonville City Council approved an expanded slate of early voting locations, along with setting dates and hours for early voting opportunities. There will be a total of 24 early voting locations, up from the 19 that were in place for this year’s city elections.

Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland, who took office in July after previously heading the elections office from 2005 to 2015, called for additional voting locations in 2024. At his request, city council president Ron Salem introduced the bill in November and it gained final approval Tuesday with a 16-0 vote.

Notable among the new locations is a site on the campus of Edward Waters University. The school had been home to a site in the 2018 election, but was dropped following that election. The previous supervisor of elections had told News4JAX it was dropped due to lower-than-expected turnout. In 2022, advocacy groups called for the return of early voting to EWU, as well as to the University of North Florida. UNF had also been an early voting site for 2018, but was also dropped following the election.

In addition to the site at EWU, the 2024 location lineup brings a site to the Bartram Park area, with a location at the Holiday Inn Bartram Park South. Previously voters in this area faced a potentially 20-minute drive to one of the Mandarin early voting locations. Arlington, Maxville, and the Southside will also have new locations that should give some voters a closer option.

The legislation also set the following dates and times for early voting:

  • March 19 Presidential Primary: March 8-16, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • August 20 Florida Primary: August 5-18, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • November 5 General Election: October 21-November 3, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

The below map shows all of the early voting locations for 2024. Green marks indicate sites that were not early voting locations in 2023.
