2024 Voter's Guide: Florida Senate District 5

Districts after 2022 redistricting

Incumbent Democrat Tracie Davis is seeking re-election in District 5, after defeating one challenger in her party’s primary. No Republicans entered this race, though there is a write-in candidate filed for the general election.

After redistricting in 2022, District 5 represents most of Jacksonville inside Interstate 295, extending west to Cecil Commerce Parkway west of the St. Johns River, but excluding anything east of Southside Boulevard and south of Baymeadows Road east of the river.

What do you see as the top three issues in this race, and how do you plan to address them?

The top three issues facing Senate District 5 residents are affordable housing, property insurance reform, and protecting Floridians’ fundamental freedoms from government interference. Throughout my time in the Florida Legislature, I have strongly advocated for increased funding for affordable and workforce housing. I have fought against property insurance legislation that supports insurance companies without providing rate relief for homeowners. Further, I have voted against legislation that places unconstitutional limitations on Floridians’ reproductive freedom, our freedom to vote, and our civil rights. Next Legislative Session, I look forward to returning to our State Capitol to continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to provide additional relief for Floridians struggling to secure an affordable place to live or stay in their homes due to rising property insurance rates, as well repealing Florida’s near-total abortion ban and other culture war laws that are harmful to our way of life.

How can you help voters in a way that others running for this office cannot?

I have fought for the interests of the citizens of Jacksonville for six years in the Florida House and now two years in the Florida Senate. As a member of the minority party, I was able to stand up for our values while still working across the aisle to pass over a dozen bipartisan bills and resolutions. I have also been able to secure millions of dollars in state funding to support projects right here in our community. The people of Jacksonville deserve a Senator who will listen and show up to fight for them every single day. I’ll never tire of fighting for you and I will continue to give my community a strong voice in the Legislature when I am re-elected to the Florida Senate this year.

What would you hope to be remembered for accomplishing after serving in this office?

I hope to be remembered as a fierce advocate for our community and those who call Jacksonville home. I have dedicated my life to public service as a special education teacher in Duval County Public Schools, as the Duval County Deputy Supervisor of Elections, as your State Representative, and now as your State Senator. Serving the people I represent and making sure their voices are heard in our State Capitol is my #1 priority, and it’s what I hope to be remembered for after serving in the Florida Senate.
