There is no incumbent on the ballot this year in District 22, which covers western Alachua County and extends west to the Gulf Coast, including Gilchrist and Levy counties. Republican Chuck Clemons couldn’t seek re-election due to term limits.
Both the Democratic and Republican primaries were contested in August. They set up the general election matchup between Democrat David Arreola and Republican Chad Johnson.

DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE |
David Arreola
Occupation: Sales Manager for 21st Century Communications, LLC
Age: 33
Family: (No response)
Education: B.A. majoring in Political Science with minors in Pre-Law, International Relations, History, and an M.B.A.
Political experience: Gainesville City Commissioners, District 3
What do you see as the top three issues in this race, and how do you plan to address them?
The State’s attack on reproductive rights, the growing gun violence epidemic, and the property insurance crisis. I support Amendment 4 and oppose abortion bans that limit health care. I support bipartisan measures to reduce gun violence such as restricting domestic abusers from purchasing weapons. I want to protect Floridians from premium increases with a cap on rate hikes. I also want to make it illegal for insurance companies to drop coverage after filing a claim or during hurricane season.
How can you help voters in a way that others running for this office cannot?
I bring the strongest public service record to the table and have the most years of experience serving the people. I was twice elected by my colleagues to serve as the Mayor Pro Tempore during times of crisis.
What would you hope to be remembered for accomplishing after serving in this office?
I will stand up to the authoritarian extremism in Florida by setting the example of a public servant who exhibits democratic values and principles.
