Moderate to major flooding expected along the Altamaha River

Flood waters expected to threaten homes in Altamaha Park

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Moderate to Major flooding along the Altamaha River this week. According to the National Weather Service of Jacksonville, Major flooding will begin Tuesday and continue through the end of the week. When the river levels reach 13 feet, water begins to encroach on Altamaha Park Road and Pennick Road. When the river elvels reach 15 feet at that location, major flooding can be expected along the roads to the Southwest of Altamaha Park and up to Highway 341, along with water effecting homes along Pennick and Old Jesup Roads. Homes within Altamaha Park will also be effected.

Only light rainfall accumulations are forecasted this week for the Altamaha River areas. Rises in river levels are anticipated moving down the lower Altamaha River Basin, with significant river rises anticipated near Everett City, Georgia. Near record flood levels are expected by the end of the week in the lower Altamaha River Basin.

The Altamaha River is reading around 13.5 feet as of Monday, January 4th- this is considered within the moderate flood stage for that location. By Tuesday, the Altamaha River is forecasted to rise above the 15 foot mark, which is the mark for major Flood Stage for that location. The Altamaha River is forecasted to continue to rise through the week, topping out just below 17 feet, which may be a record high level for that location.
