Cold enough to freeze but will it ice over?

Parts of Georgia may see sleet and ice

Odds for winter precipitation Friday night into Saturday morning.

How likely is winter precipitation Friday night?…pretty low. Yet there is a slight chance for some sleet or ice on the ground for areas north of Waycross late Friday night into Saturday morning.

Our viewers in southern Georgia between Waycross and northern Glenn County have less than a 10% chance to see any ice. The low odds have to do with the timing of the cold and the departure of the rain.

Ground temperatures may not reach freezing quick enough before the rain pushes out Saturday morning. It is possible some tree branches, metal objects or bridges see a light ice glaze.

Still take caution if driving late Friday night in southern Georgia.

Overpasses cool quicker because air chills both sides of the bridge compared to the ground which takes longer to radiate off the heat from the day.

Most areas south of Alma, Georgia, will only get cold light rain or drizzle. Regardless, it will feel like winter.

After the mid-70s Thursday, freezing air would need to move in quickly for the rain to turn over to sleet Friday night. Had cold air existed before the rain moved in Friday, the odds for sleet would be higher.

Ice is possible Saturday morning if rain continues while temps drop down to freezing, but amounts would be less than a tenth of an inch due to the light rain totals predicted.
