A study on Jacksonville urban heat will be a hot topic

Heat maps evaluate the hottest parts of town

Heat maps will be designed for Jacksonville by CAPA Strategies who made Vancouver maps that reveal the thermal risks for parts of the city along with demographic factors. (http://www.capainsights.com/)

Do you feel like your part of town is always hotter than the other side?

It could be or not, but this summer we will soon find out which parts of town sizzle with a study involving the City, UNF and CAPA Strategies environmental consultants.

The results of the study will make up a detailed heat map highlighting the riskiest zones for urban heat.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provided a $13,000 grant to gather the information that will help mitigate the dangerous conditions in those heat islands.

The initiative has been championed by Chief Resiliency Officer Anne Coglianese who understands the climate change threat and recognizes urban heat as the nation’s deadliest natural hazard.

During the hottest part of this summer, UNF will collect a week’s worth of data with sensors driven through the city at scheduled times.

UNF Assistant Professor Adam Rosenblatt will spearhead the research to provide a baseline for a city resiliency action plan.
