Twin lows in the Atlantic this week

Rip currents and surf increase into the holiday weekend

.

Two nontropical low pressure systems are not likely to develop ahead of hurricane season. Still, they are getting attention for our local cool down and high risk for rip current risk into Memorial Day Weekend.

A weak low pressure north of the Bahamas will drift northward close to the southeastern coast of the United States this week. Our onshore breezes will increase as the low works in tandem with a ridge of high pressure over the eastern seaboard.

.

Later this weekend a second low may spin up east of Jacksonville which could keep the waves high along the coast this weekend. This will be a concern for lifeguards headed into the busy Memorial Day weekend. Water temperatures reached the low 80s and rip currents will stay high through the period.

.

The heat will be suppressed as winds blow from the northeast between 15-20 mph by mid to the end of the week with higher gusts at the coast. This flow will likely keep many places around town cooler than normal in the low 80s.
